East Coast Rendevous?

Since it seems that we are talking about a Chesapeake Bay site for the rendezvous might I suggest that we hold it over the weekend of the Annapolis boat show? As an extra bonus there is the annual Good Old Boat Regatta that same weekend and if we get three Vega's we could get our own start. The boat show is the first or second weekend in October which is usually a great time for sailng on the bay-definetly better then mid summer.

That sounds like a great idea! I'd have to think twice about being so far away that late in the season, but I think that's a great idea for a Mid-Atlantic Vega qathering.

The Annapolis Boat show time has a disadvantage as well as some
advantages. A group of sailors from Deltaville Va. went up there and
we all anchored out near the show. It turned out that almost everyone
spent all there time at the boat show and we all missed out on the
camaraderie we had expected. IF we met at Annapolis I would say a few
days before the show or a few days after. That way anyone who wants can
come a day or two early and spend some time at the show. That way we
will still have plenty of time to get to know each other and see each
others boats. Another way might be to have everyone agree to the show
on the same day or something like that so that we can all have time
together. You can see where I am coming from, I am afraid it will
become a boat show event rather than a Vega event.
We used to go to the boat show and anchor right in front of it.
Does anyone know if that is still possible? It was always crowded, so
some may not want to anchor there, but if you want to go to the show its
only a shirt dingy trip. I can almost guarantee that no one would be
bored. I was there one year when the naval Academy yawls raced through
the anchorage and mooned us all :) With so many boats there, there
is something going on all the time. It really is fun.

The boat show is a LOT of fun.

Im not an expert, but I think the main options in annapolis to fix your boat to something are as follows.

1. Anchor out in the overflow area. But this can get choppy due to direct line of sight to the bay.
2. Mooring balls. :There are a bunch of them just inside the creek leading to the annapolis dock.
3. Docks right up in annapolis. There are like maybe 20 slips here.
4. Anchor or mooring balls further up Spa? creek passed annapolis docks through the bridge.
5. The next creek down from annapolis (back creek?) has stuff too.
6. The next creeks (and continuing river) up from annapolis.

During the show, you can't get to the close mooring balls or the city docks as the show is all set up there.

The water taxis are wonderful and you dont need a dingy. Taxi will come to your boat and rides are like $2. They run really late on the weekends.

There are shower/laundry facilities at the city dock for boaters. Its clean and nice. Tokens are about $1 to get in.

Lots of restaurants and stores within walking distance.

To do the vega thing, I would think if we arrived a couple of days early and just socialised together before the boat show begins, and then everyone can enjoy the show when it starts.

I don't know if west-coasters are more laid back than easterners, maybe. We
hold a really simple rendezvous that doesn't cause anyone much work--somebody
picks a place, contacts the marina and asks them if they can hold onto 10 slips
in the same vicinity of the marina for a specific Friday & Saturday night during

the summer. Then put the word out on this group, and ask Chuck to post it on
the AVA website. Make sure everyone knows they have to contact the marina
themselves by whatever date the marina says, to make a firm reservation. There,
you're done.

The first year you might have 3 boats, but it'll grow. We have people come to
our rendezvous (how do I make that word plural??) without boats, but with an
enduring love of Vegas and Vega owners--so it's nice if the marina is near
hotel/motels and/or camping facilities for the boatless.

My advice? Don't over organize--just provide a venue for bringing nice people
together who share a common interest in a good ole' boat, and good things will
happen.

Sheila

I believe we've considered a "Chesapeake Section" rendezvous before, maybe a
couple years ago. There are plenty of Vegas around - especially if you include
North Carolina all the way up to Pennsylvania and Delaware.

However, I'm afraid that we ended up punting because nobody had the time to
organize the whole thing - maybe it's true that we East-Coaster are more
workaholic or less laid=back than the West-Coasters?
So, what we need is someone to propose a specific spot (somewhere near the
Maryland/Virginia line border?) and take the lead "...and they shall come".
Maybe Jody can get something started and then write about it in the CB Magazine?

Nice wrap-up on staying in Annapolis area, Roy!

How about everyone else? Does the plan of meeting up just before the Sailboat Show sound good?

Hello Everyone,

The Annapolis venue sounds great to us.

I like the idea of getting there before the boat show and spending some time together. The only problem I see is that it would take about one week to sail to Annapolis and one week back to Groton, so I don't know for sure if we will be able to make it by boat. Our oldest son will be living at home and starting his first year in college and our youngest will be a sophomore in High School. Two kids at home.

I must say that my kids are either much better than I was as a teenager, or are very good at keeping things under wraps.

We would definitely make it by car if we can't make it by boat.

I too am interested in an East Coast Rendevous, but like the idea of different
sites. New England anyone? I sail out of Stockton Harbor, Maine.

Cheers.........

Good morning Andrew. We would be very interested in a Maine Vega
gathering. I believe there are about four to six Vegas in our immediate area, and
Nicholas in the Portland area. We have often met a fellow named Paul who
moors his boat in Belfast Harbor. I think you may have another Vega in
Stockton Springs unless he sold his boat to you. We've encouraged those we meet
to join the Association, but many do not even though there is no cost. As
you know, there are many beautiful and well-protected harbors within a few
hours sail from you. We are in Benjamin River off the Reach that has many
moorings which can be rented, although there are no services such as
motels, restaurants, etc. Belfast would offer all those amenities and is a neat
little town to explore. We've all winter to plan--it is not that
difficult to do. Just need to pick a harbor and a date--voila! The rest comes
naturally as Vega sailors never tire of swapping stories. You can call us at
207-989-4377. Any of you Maine Vega sailors who are reading this thread,
come on, hop on board!

Melanie,

Thank you for your note. Hopefully we get a few more hits from others in Maine
and we can then find a harbor as centrally located as possible and set a date. Andrew Dalton

Annapolis sounds ambitious for me coming from Hampton, VA (usually I work full time in October - no hope for a vacation). I have to say I'm also a bit worried trying to fit into what got to be the busiest time for an already usually busy tourist destination. How much time in advance do we have to make reservations? Even with the water taxi, it's a lot less convenient if we can't have slips (which I assume we can't or it will be prohibitively expensive). Call me a wuss, but I've got only a porta potty on board and I really like the convenience of nearby facilities (and power hook-up). The whole idea just conjures up the opposite image of a "laid back", serene gathering for a bunch of Vegatarians. ;-) I sorta liked the Reedville idea...

But I may be wrong - I've been only once to Annapolis (a LONG time ago) and never for the boat show. If y'all think it's the best solution, by all means, let's do it. I can definitely get there by car (assuming, once again, that a hotel room not too far from the marina can be had at all, and even for a reasonable price).

Thats a good point.

If you are looking for laid back... annapolis isnt really that.
I would describe it as kind of a seamans cosmopolitan place?
And with the boat show, it gets to be an orgy of boats, gear, shopping, eating, and drinking.

Also, if the plan is to all be at one spot, that will take some real planning. Probably starting soon. It is a very busy water way during the show.

But, i am not pushing any particular place. Its up to the group.
Annapolis and the boat show have some nice things to offer, but so do other locations.

Hi Alanc,

At the moment, we're weighing the benefits of the sailboat show,
Annapolis and Good Old Boat Regatta vs. someplace like Reedville or
Windmill Point where we can pretty much take over joint and declare it
Vegaville! for the weekend. Tough call!

Your suggestion sounds beautiful to me, and just perfectly "relaxed and laid back". Of course, I'm being selfish - sailing up to the Rappahanock would be a challenging but doable "adventure" for me (as opposed to Annapolis). In the end, maybe we can have a vote - I'm willing to consider either option, sailing to Yankee Point Marina or driving (by car) to Annapolis.

We're in Annapolis right now, and I can't help but think that this is the best place we have been so far on our trip south from Lake Champlain. I for one am thinking that Annapolis would be a wonderful place for the rendezvous.

Hi Kristopher,

As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure I saw your boat this morning anchored in Back Creek. Yes? I jumped up and down and hollered (discreetly) a few times from the shore, but the dog was starting to look embarrassed, so we finally wandered off.

And, yes, Annapolis is truly a great place for sailboats and visiting! Glad you discovered it!

The disadvantage from a rendezvous standpoint is that it's such a great place for sailboats and for visiting that in the summer and early fall it is hard to find enough room to swing a short dock line. Hence the debate and the desire to find a place?Annapolis or elsewhere?where gathering Vegas can meet in a single place to visit each other's boats and solidify our Vegahood, so to speak.

Annapolis is still a good choice for the rendezvous. So is Yankee Point Marina on the Rappahannock, as was suggested. The only disadvantage I see to Yankee Point is lack of nearby restaurants, taverns or other congenial meeting places within easy reach. (BTW, I have to defend my suggestion of Windmill Point, just a little, since it has been dredged and the marina as been totally rebuild with jolly nice floating docks?I stayed their this summer?but that said I think better places exist.) And we still have lots of possibilities in the middle bay to add to those, including:

Crisfield: good state-owned marina, lots of restaurants but out of the way
Solomons: lots of marinas, anchoring spots and restaurants
Deltaville: same though not as many restaurants
Galesville: same as Deltaville
Tall Timbers Marina on Potomac: I throwing this in because it's my favorite quirky marina and it has a restaurant

Perhaps we should set a deadline?say December 15?for places and then take a vote. I'll post the list and then we can vote, say randomly, December 16 through January 15. Then all we need to do is set the date and make the arrangements.

So East Coasters, the floor is still open for nominations. Jody

Hi Jody, You are right Windmill point would be a nice place. I had not
been aware that the place had been fixed up. I just asked my wife and
she said it had been almost ten years ago that we were there. Amazing
how time flies. Another nice thing is it's right across the river from
Deltaville where there is a West marine and Boat Us. Same thing of
course, actually it's owned by West now. There are several pretty good
restaurants and the whole town really appreciates the fact that they
make their living off of boaters. There are a lot of Marinas there so
engine parts are available, haul outs and at least a couple diesel
mechanics. So Yes Windmill point would be a nice place. I lived in
Deltaville for many years and know everybody in town. It might also be a
nice destination but my suggestions keep getting farther south.:-\ Doug
