O'Day 25 launching

I'm assuming that you're thinking of buying an OD 25 keel centerboard sloop. It really depends on the type of trailer you're planning on using and the depth of the ramp that you would launch from. Two of our club members have bunk trailers for their OD 25 and 26 sloops, and they don't seem to have a problem launching at our club ramp at high tide. Most of the OD 25s have a mast raising system that came with the boat, that allows you to raise the mast with the aid of the boom as a Gin Pole, along with a bridle to keep it centered while raising and lowering. The OD 25 is a pretty nice boat for coastal cruising. Joe

Ramps are all different

I can't use my ramp at high tide because it starts out with a gradual slope and get steeper further out. I can only use it at low tide. At high tide the truck is in the water before the trailer's fenders even get wet. Therefore, check out your local ramp or ask other local sailors.

Kick-up Rudder

Hi Steve Braverman, I noticed that your boat has a kick-up rudder. What make is it and are you happy with the performance? Robert

Kick up Rudder

Robert I have a O'Day 23 which has very simular lines to the 25. Last summer I broke the rudder off just below the lower pintal, which meant I had to make a repair. I'd always found the boat would roll over and round up in a gust and thought I was pulling the rudder out of the water in these conditions. So when I repaired the rudder I extended it 14 inches. I found this made a vast improvement in the boats sailing charateristics. It no longer rounds up excesivly in a puff, I can now hold it down with the helm. The real problem with the old short design was it would stall when to much helm angle was applied. Which was also the root cause of the rudder breakage in the first place. The down side is the rudder now sticks significantly bellow the keel. Therefore I'm now building a kick up rudder that will draw 3'6" when down. I used to race a S2 7.9 Grand Slam which had a dagger board and folding rudder it was a super combination we could get into water as shallow as 18" I think you will be very happy if you can find or build a folding rudder. Rudder

I got the rudder from Idasailor. It's the same rudder sold on this site. So far I like it a lot. It's a little hard to raise sometimes, but I think they've redesigned the rudder to fix that problem. The price has been raised a bit though. I only paid about $600 for mine. I lost my rudder in a storm and the Idasailor rudder was much cheaper than an oem replacement from D&R.

While I cannot attest to launching a 25, I have a 1979 23 that I launch all the time. I've never met a ramp I didn't like, and I've even pulled it around with my minivan. OK the 25 is something like 1000# heavier, but it really doesn't take a lot of water to get the stern to float off the trailer. Then I pull it off using a little outboard motor. To retrieve I just sail it in and winch the boat onto the trailer. The tounge of my trailer is pretty long and the axles allow the bottom of the keel to sit about 12" aboe the ground. On most ramps the stern is floating even before my rear tires are wet....others I'm into about 6" of water at the rear tire. Somewhere I have written down all of the lenghts (Axle to hitch, tounge-length, DWL above the road, keel above the road---that sorta stuff) but I can't find it now. Buy it, haul it to a nearby ramp, and get it in the water, if you can get it afloat, you'll get it back out.
