I am considering a cruising code 0 type sail with a continuous line furler (Doyle UPS or similar from other sailmakers) for a Hunter e36 - has anyone rigged this on this particular boat?

It looks to me like the furler assembly won't fit between the jib and pulpit and that I will need a removable bowsprit to move the tack forward for clearance. However, the anchor (lewmar delta) looks like it would interfere with the sprit (I know - can remove the anchor - but would prefer not to)

I would love to hear feedback from anyone that uses a Doyle UPS or similar sail on a furler and particularly if someone has rigged it on the e36.

Someone here on the forum posted this once.... I saved it because I thought it was cool and would work great with my cruising chute. There was also some information I saved on who makes it but can not find it right now. May be they will see this and chime back in.

Lewmar, Forespar, and Selden, among others, make sprits that would work. they are designed to be removed or slid back when not in use, but every one that I've looked at interferes with the anchor locker lid unless you can move it way back. Costs start around $400 an go up depending on mounting fittings, blocks, and materials-you can get one made out of carbon fiber

Not Yet

I have the Selden sprit and furling for my spinnaker but Have not had a chance to finish installing it yet do to me being so busy and very windy winter here in Florida.
I had to change my home docking location a while back and getting the boat ready and cleaned up for our 3 week cruise to the keys, but now back from our 3 week cruise and at a new dock I will be able to get everything installed and can't wait to try everything out for sure.
I did talk to some one else setting up the same system but last time we spoke he was having problems do to too much windy trying to install the system first time.

onecoolair,

It's my boat in the photo. My boat is over at the Boardwalk Marina. I made the bowsprit out of aluminum conduit. It works great and getting the tack of the a-sail a couple feet out in front of the boat makes a big difference. I'd like to say I did a lot of calculation and experimenting to come up with how long to make it, but it's what will fit into the back of my Avalanche. You can't have the anchor on the roller with it, but undo one cleat hitch and the bowsprit comes right off. I've got some 3" aircraft tubing to rebuild it with, because the 2" conduit bends when the apparent wind gets over 12 knots. I probably have less than $100 into it and I didn't have to drill any holes in the deck. I plan on being out on the bay Saturday with the a-sail out on the sprit.

Thanks for info Bill.... I am just on the other side bridge from you. I have an adjustable spinnaker / whisker pole that will extent past my "J" dimension that I would like to use. I have been thinking that I could mount another attachment point at base of mast and then all I would need to do was figure a good way to cradle or hold steady the pole as it passes over the anchor out past the bow.

Nick,
I am revisiting this project. How did your installation go with the Selden pole? Are you using a top down furler? I would be interested in photos and/or any tips.
Thanks

No Photo's

I don't have any photo's as yet.
I have not yet had a chance to try out the selden top down furler yet but the install is good so far and the inportant part is to make sure the jib halyard is
very tight so that the sail furles and unfurles.
I was away for 3 months and took all my time cleaning and getting boat ready for our 3 week cruise which we started just today but when I get back the top down furler is first on our list.

This is how i did. No interference with the anchor and a good platform men going ashore

Furler

I did get everything installed and the selden spit pole was installed
and the top down was all measured and cut and installed and so when
we first tried nfurling the sail it would not furl so I called selden and was told that the haylard needed to be really tight and after making the haylard really tight it furled very nicely while at the dock.

Patrik, that looks like a great setup.

Nick, interesting, I had heard that the top down furlers weren't as sensitive to halyard tension, but I guess they are. Do you have a bobstay on the sprit to counter the tension?
I'm looking at the Facnor furler, which has a slightly different system than the Selden.
Does anyone out there use the Facnor asym-fx?
