Stumbled across this video on YouTube where several different splices were load tested. Interesting findings. The video is geared more towards climbers then sailors, still worth the watch if you are using dyneema lines.

Very cool experiments. I’ve done Brummel splices in the past and wondered the same thing he mentioned about whether the twists would make a weak spot, so I’m glad to see it doesn’t. Checking my notes it looks like I’ve done 72x buries, so that should be pretty safe; certainly safer than the last example he showed.

Nice videos.
When I tested the soft shackles I made using the Brian Toss design, the K75 Dyneema with a square cut end broke at 2 times the average breaking strength. The break was at the square cut buried take.

While the square cut is simpler to make, I now taper 3-1. The break strength is now 4 times the listed average breaking strength of the line.

72x diameter for the bury is the guideline I came across. Less than that seems to not perform as well.
