I just became a Hunter owner about two months ago.. life has never been better. however I was out in 15-20 knt winds two weeks ago and when I returned to the marina I notices the aft dutchman line, which goes down the back holes in the mainsail, was broken. Not sure when or how it happened, but its busted. Since I'm a new boat owner I thought i'd ask you experts how to fix it. I think I can let the topping lift down and connect and thread a new line(what kind) through the sail .. am I close? thanks, Rob and crew s/v 'You Be u'

What kinda line depends.

Rob: It depends on the vintage of you system. The older one used a fabric line. The new ones use monofilament. Contact Dutchman they will tell you what you need (may even supply it). Good people and a good product.

Dutchman Line

When I was faced with the same problem on my 40.5, I was directed to a tackle store for monofilament fishing line to replace the Dutchman line. They wanted to sell me 500ft! Instead, I went to my local hardware outlet and bought same size string trimmer line. It has worked fine for several weeks and reefs, hoists, etc. It even comes in several different colors! You get 150 ft. for about $10. Ron

Dutchman

Rob, I had the same problem with my 33.5. I replaced both Dutchman lines with vinyl coated stainless braided wire from West Marine. Fortunately, I had my mast down and I replaced both the topping lift and Dutchman lines at the same time. With the mast upright, you will have to slacken the topping lift substantially so that it will lie close enough to the mast to enable you to reach the Duthcman line clamps while using a Bosan's chair or either use a crane in a boatyard to get you to the necessary height/position. Good Luck.

Call Dutchman direct at...

(203)838-0375. They are located at Cove Marina in Norwalk CT. Tell them that you need new control lines. Tell them how old the boat is, and they should be able to supply you with the proper control lines. They are nice folks too. Mark Johnson

I used weed-wacker line

of the same size. It's been up for 4 years now without a problem... Got it in a lawn supply store.

the fix

I used weed wacker line as well. It works great. As far is gaining access to the Dutchman clam shells, you don't need to go up the chair. I sewed a messenger line end to end with the topping lift line, and was able to draw it down and work on both clamps with ease. Make sure you connect the lines together real well. I used good thread, and then duct taped it to keep it in line. I am sure there are better ways, but it worked.

another dutch question

I was at the StPete, fl sailboat show this past weenend. I found the Dutchman exhibit and you guys were right. They are really nice people. In fact they even gave me the replacement line(monofiliment) and a owners manual, to do the fix. However, the display the had at the show had a block and tackle assemble on the topping lift where it was connected to the boom. I raced back to the 'You Be U' mono in hand only to find my topping lift had no such block assemble. question .. if i dissconnect the topping lif from the boom will it fall and crush the bimini? I am tring to find a support for the boom while I pull the clam shells down but want to make sure i do it right. It should be a simple fix, except for threading the line through the sail while its furled. Thanks again for the help. Rob and crew s/v "You Be U'

Suport boom with main halyard

Rob, Just use the main halyard to hoist up the boom end while you drop the topping lift. An extra person on the opposite side of the boom to help thread the control line would probably make the job go much easier. Rich
