Goodness, what a lovely job you're doing! Congratulations, your boat
will be wonderful. Is the additional rudder a common addition? I
had never imagined it, but can easily believe it would be wonderful
for getting in and out of a marina. . .and for that matter, for
running in rough conditions. Is the axis of rotation parallel with
the (inclined) axis of the original rudder or is it perpendicular to
the waterline? Thank you for the excellent website. Ken Preston,

An amazing amount of what appears to be high quality work.

The auxilary rudder would be useful while backing or going forward at very low speed, particularly backing, conditions under which control is not quite satisfactory because of the propellor placement. Under other conditions it will merely add drag. Certainly very useful for entering or leaving a slip.

Hi Mort,
You answered my question before I got a chance to ask it. I was wondering if that extra rudder assist was for powering only. Or if there was an advantage to it while sailing.

Hi All

We had the same discussion at the last IFR. With the extra rudder there
did not appear to be hinderance to speed on sailing, in fact I think
three of the first four in the cruising class were fitted with the
“Help-Rudder”. There has now been an extra class for racing at the IFR
for Vegas with any additions below the waterline. Help rudders, transom
rudders, wind steering rudders etc. Believe me there has not been any
loss of speed with the addition of these rudders and in fact it seems as
though there may be some speed advantage (could be the speed of turning
during tacking etc).

Certainly allows for controlled use of the Vega going backwards and
forwards. Takes about two days to fit but you need a bit of fiberglass
experience.

Kind Regards
