Just bought a c-30 1983. The boat is in fresh water. The bottom has mossy build-up. Is there a reasonable way to clean it off while the boat is in the water?

I use a mask, snorkle and a scrub brush. But, it's warm here

cleaning tool

I have a "drydiver" for cleaning my bottom. Its a scratch pad that is mounted (with velcrove) onto a plastic pad and has a curved PVC handle. It really cleans well. I did the bottom of my 380 today and it took about 15 minutes. Mine came with the boat, but I have seen them advertised before at West Marine. It sold for $100.

Snorkle Skills

I clean my hull once or twice a year. It's a good opportunity to work on my snorkling skills. A good investment would be a handle with 2 suction cups because in many places around the hull it's difficult to find a good hand hold or have much leverage when cleaning. So I have the handle with the suction cups in one hand and a scrub pad with a handle on the back on the other hand.

Dive yourself or hire someone....

....I'm in salt water and I use a wetsuit so I need a weight belt to keep from bobbing to the surface. I also loop a length of rope around the bottom, tied to stanchions, to give me something to hold on to. Use the least abrasive scrubber you need to do the job. If it's just algae, an old piece of carpet would probably work fine. If that is to much of a pain, hire a diver. Ask around the dock or check the yellow pages, expect to pay $30-40 for the first cleaning, $20-25 after that. One thing a diver will do is a complete inspection for things like electrolyis and blisters etc. You should have had that done when you purchased the boat, though.
