I am about to prove that I really am as dumb as I look! Can anyone tell me what a Cherubini hunter is? I am guessing that they were designed by some guy named Cherubini? What makes them different? Are they better? or....

What years were they manufactured? What models?

Thanks

Your not alone - I have also wondered about this since entering sailing and owning a Hunter, but I was too dumb to ask :).

Cherubinis better?

All of us Cherubini owners think so. :) And yes, the Hunters from around 1975 through 1984 were designed by John Cherubini. Those would be the 25, 27, 30, 33, 36, 37-cutter, and 54. There were at least two other Hunters built in 1984 after Mr. Cherubini finished his stay.

I think the H40 and the H31 first came out in 1984. Those were the first of the Hunter internal design team boats. John Cherubini's son, also John, frequents this site and often provides interesting history. You can also learn a lot just by Googling "John Cherubini".

The boats are solid and traditional. They were built before it was known just how thin you can make a plastic boat. So they were overbuilt, kind of like an old 1948 Ford compared to a new one. They sail very well and are an inexpensive way to get into a seaworthy boat. I bought mine because I wanted an affordable cutter in which I could safely ply the big waters. And I have.

My wife and I bought our 1980 Hunter 27 about three years ago and I had no idea about what a Cherubini was or even knew that we owned one until 2 summers ago, while docked at a yacht club in Huntington Harbor, a nice gentleman asked permission to come aboard. He was a former owner of a Hunter 27 and raved about the Cherubini. This gentleman now owned a 2005 h36, but his heart and memories were with the Cherubini. I got up enough courage to show my lack of boat knowledge and asked him What is a Cherubini? The gentleman proceeded to explain all of the qualities of the boat which was designed by the greatest of designers, John Cherubini.
Now, when someone asks what kind of sailboat I own, I answer with great pride, a Hunter Cherubini.

Dumb Question

One reason the Hunter Cherubinis have a greater cache now is the Cherubinis that came after. Hunters were low cost vessels well designed by John but not manufactured like Cherubini Yachts: www.cherubiniyachts.com. His personal company produces some of the finest yachts in the world with characteristic that allow them to produce very little bow wave which produces greater speeds.
