My 31'Hunter is covered with stuff . Last week the ducks have started using my double spreaders as resting seats. After a few days almost 75% of the rear deck was covered with a 1/8" thick multi layer of duck #%^&*@!! I have an owl and rubber snake and they were covered too! I cleaned up but was again back on Sunday for 3 hours scrubbing. They sit on the boats next to me and watch. This is a very bad situation on a well maintained boat. Please advise.

The "Used Car Lot" type raised from the main halyard and strung from shrouds, transom and bow to the masthead. The racket from their flapping may not be acceptable to you marnia though. here's a story to ease your pain
The boom of my Hunter31 has an opening in it in the back. Every time I go down to the boat I see stalks of grass in the cockpit and sticking out the opening in the boom. Sparrows have been making a nest in there. I once found 3 eggs which I carefully removed and set on a high perch in the yard in a nest I found as well. Everytime I go aboard I knock on the boom(to scare the potential inhabitants away-but none are ever found). However as part of our departure sequence I always remove the grass. One time I forgot to knock on the boom and just reached in to remove the grass and wouldn't you know it, two birds FLEW OUT! My heart was in my throat and my pulse was 120! And I jumped back and fell unto the cockpit floor much to the entertainment of several boaters passing by. I solved this problem with "duck" tape(Punny?) over the opening.

Hi Jerry Had same problem on my h27, single spreader. My solution was to rig a small line ( 1/4" nylon) from spreader boot to boot. Elevate center, at mast, about 7". In my case the running light was in perfect position. You may have to pop rivet a fairlead. Might even use a temp. knot around mast, while away, to see if it works for you. This has been a permanent fix for me. Good luck red PS- If you really want to be nasty, use stainless wire

Try running monofilament fishing line from the mast to the spreader tips. (I've heard 6" above the spreaders, but I guess it depends on how tall your ducks are...). The ducks come in to land, their feet hit the mono and they don't like it. Jim "Prospect"

plastic bags
I have a similar problem but all year long from egrets and pelicans. I have found that loosely covering the lazarettes with plastic bags and even attaching them to shrouds or the topping lift (so they can flap a bit)seems to work the best. It is not 100% but is better than snakes or owls. The noise is minimal so it does not disturb anyone or you if sleeping aboard. If they do bomb the lazarette, chuck the bag and use a new one. Garbage bags are cheap. The biggest drawback is that they are not very pretty but then again neither is the alternative
