I've just purchased a First 285. I didn't inspect the batteries as well as I should perhaps. Now I'm trying to correct let me explain:
The two batteries sit too high for the pocket designed. At the Beneteau site it looks like the sailboat only came with one 60amp battery. [ someone can explain 2 position switches and a single battery, that'd be fine with me too] Anyway, possibly someone has similiar circumstances hopefully.
Rather then purchase to side mount batteries should I merely add a filler strip of wood to allow clearance for battery posts and deck for bunk?
Thanks :D

You have to take your space where you can find it. On my 323 I did the filler strip to raise the bunk boards. Are your two switches one black (neg) and the other red (pos)?

Before making any irreversible decisions about raising the settee, it being a new-to-you boat, I'd first do a load test and other measurements to ensure the current batteries are worth keeping - if not, problem solved.
