I have a 26M and would like to convert my trailer to dual axle. Can anyone provide information? Can you buy a bolt on mod? Do you have to buy a new trailer? Any cost estimates? All replies appreciated. Thanks Lowell

Adding an axle...
The link given in LONNIE's post will help. A site under the name of Chip Hinds shows a good modification for the extra axle. Chip tows his Mac-X from up North all the way to Florida, so his modification works well. I have a Mac-X, and feel that an extra axle is needful also. Im looking into a aluminum, tandum, new trailer. Some in my "mast up" marina have already upgraded to an aluminum which look nice and light. These original 'iron ' mac trailers are a mess around salt water. Happy Sailing...!!

If you are upgrading the existing or getting a new trialer be sure to specify torsion axles instead of the cheap, hard to control spring leaf type. They make a world of difference in ride and control, plus not nearly as much maintenance. Better made travel trailers have them for a reason.

I also have torsion axels. I have them on my stock trailer, although they are back 3" from the original spot of center. I also have Stainless Steel disc brakes. With this set up, tongue weight is not a problem, stopping the trailer is easier, and towing...Well let me put it this way. I have been up to 75 mph trailering about 3600 lbs. (loaded boat), the first time I hit a cattle guard, my eyes opened wide and I quickly looked into the rearview mirror and the boat never moved side to side or jumped, like a trailer with leaf springs. Dual axel is not necessarily better.

nobody has mentioned how much harder the duals are to move in tight spaces, tight turns, etc, req one pair of wheels to 'drag' across the pavement sideways, , and making the tight turns harder, leaving ruts in yards. they are better in the highways at speed, but if only driving around town, single may be better.

What a thought
Wouldn't it be nice to have the rear set of wheels pull up so you can manuver in tight places? Oh man..... would only add thousands to the trailer cost. Steve

RCman, just about any good trailer shop can add an axle for you. If you're good you can do it yourself a lot cheaper. Axles can be bolted on or welded. I'd try and duplicate the single axle you have. Would probably want to move it back or forward and place the two axles to either side of the original axle center point on the frame....didn't say that quite right but I think you get the point. Steve
