I'm going to install hanks on my jib which has a wire luff. How many hanks should I use, how far apart and how close to the tack and head of the sail do I attach them. I've looked at a lot of pictures and 6 hanks seems to be the number but it's hard to be sure from some of the photos.

Thanks, Bill

Bill,
I would go to your public library and draw out a book on Sailmaking and repairs. Also, check out this site for info and needed materials for this job. http://www.sailrite.com/

Thanks Joe. Sailrite is where I intend to buy the hanks. I'll continue to research for answers to my other questions.

On my DS II (same jib, theoretically) the bottom hank is about 18" or so up from the tack, the top hank is about 6" or so down from the head, and there are a total of 6 hanks (roughly equally spaced). The standard DS jib has a 15' luff, so the hanks will be about 2.5' apart (seems wide spacing, but I'm estimating from memory and a picture of my boat) I'd check my jib but it is stored at our cottage 40 miles from my home (as is the boat). I used to keep my sails in my home attic for the winter..... too bad I stopped doing that!
I've included a close-up of the jib from the picture that I made my estimates with, too bad you can't see the top hank.... well, it should still help! I also included the whole pic, do I look relaxed? Maybe I'm trying to ignore the powerboater (my Dad) trying to take the picture?

Thanks Sunbird. Ordered the jib hanks and went ahead and got seven just to be sure. I ordered a bunch of other stuff this week including a mainsail. Should be ready to go in a few weeks. Stepped the mast for the first time today. Went up easy. Just need to get it in the water under sail to figure out if the rake is OK. Thanks again ! Bill

I had a chance to check my Jib today, for reference the hanks are spaced 29" apart, with the lowest one 29" up the luff from the tack and the top one approximately 3" from the head.
