Drop-In Re-power

I have a 78 H30. I have seen various threads about re-powers, engine type etc... But my question is, is there a "drop in" re-power ( more power ) for the YSM12? I realize I will need to make adjustments for the shaft, but I'm not interested in redoing the mounting beds etc. Will a 2GM20 fit the same way, just cut a few inches from the shaft and bolt onto beds? Thanks

Check websites or call.

Many of the websites have exact dimensions of both the mounts and overall engine. Granted, it takes time to find them all. So a call or e-mail to Torresen might save you time. They and Mack Boring could probably tell you off the tops of their respective heads. :) I have done some of this work and know, for example, that a Bukh(http://www.lsm-diesel.dk/engelsk/index.htm) will mount where my 2QM20 sits. And for a lot less than a Yanmar.

2GM20 VS YSM12

I but a 2GM20 where a YSM12 was last year. Best I can remember it was the same with on the mounting feet. The best way is to measure you mounts athwartship and longitudnal *NOTE* MEASURE IN CENTIMETERS. If you go to the YANMAR or MASTRY web sites they have the dimensions. so....

thanks to both of you. So Pat, you didn't need to raise or lower the engine beds? Just pull the old, put in the new, and I assume you have to re-do all the exhaust, water hoses etc. My understanding is they are approximately the same length, so no need to make shaft changes? Also, how much of an improvement in performance (speed, especially against a headwind ) over the YSM12? Thanks for the help. John

repower

I helped a freind with this project in a (I can't remember)boat. We had to cut out the cockpit and raise the floor to clear the larger engine. **NOT APPLICABLE to a Hunter** I have a 2QM15 in my 30 and I can do about 7. A nother owner in the marina has the YSM12 and he say's he can get 5, 5.5. You have room on the beds for fore/aft adjustment. Drill new holes and bolt her down, I don't think there will be any change to the shaft except realignment. The ehxaust on the 2GM20 is on the same side as the YSM, so some new hose should solve that problem. The water intake is also on the starboard side of the engine ready for your thru-hull under the galley. Pat McCartin 1979 H30 "Therapy" Lake Lanier, GA

Thanks

Scared me for a second with the cut out the cockpit..... Sounds good. I am fairly mechanical, have rebuilt car motors etc, but I just don't want to get into fiberglassing and making dramatic alterations to engine angles etc. Too much work to be fun. Thanks for your help. John

I put a 3GM30F in a 1977 H30

The 2GM20F & the 3GM30F differ only in length. The width of both is narrower than the YSB12. The engine bed fooled me. The wooden stringers, under the fiberglass, were wider than the glassed area. There is a gap inside. I ended up removing the inner glass, and building up the gap with epoxy laminates. It worked, but was a much bigger job than I bargained for.
