Drive Shaft Stuffing Box Seal

I recently purchased a 1993 31' Beneteau and according to the Volvo manual the drive shaft stuffing box seal should be changed after 500 hours or 5 years of use. I know that the seal in this boat has never been changed. It appears to be in good condition. Has anyone out there ever changed this seal? Has anyone had a problem with this seal in the past? Norm H.

I recently changed mine on a 2000 model 321 with about 70 hours. I put in a PSS dripless seal so I never have to worry about it. The rubber seal already had a little bit of wear. I think, from what I have heard, that one of the bigger issues is the alignment of the two shafts. Can get excessive wear otherwise. Had trouble getting the output shaft apart since it is a tapered fit. I did not have an extractor. I asked the yard to do it.
