I'm in need of a dripless shaft seal for a 1988 Catalina 30 with a Universal 25XP engine. After launch a few days ago, I noticed water coming in from the seal. The carbon had cracked. The boat was hauled and after about four hours, I got the shaft disconnected. The existing seal is about 5.5 inches long and the PSS I bought would not fit as it is about 7 inches long. I called PYI and they said that is what they have. Does anyone have any info on other manufacturers of seals which might fit? Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks...John

John.. you mean the bellows? that compresses to keep the carbon ring pressed against the stainless ring. the carbon ring on yours cracked you say? never heard of that ! Don't hammer on or off your transmission flange when you put it back together. if you have to get a new split coupling rather then deal with pressing and pulling good luck!

John, are you sure the dripless seal that's in there is a PSS seal?

If so you should be able to use the carbon ring from the new one. Replacing the existing flange with a split flange will also make the job easier.

Can you post a photo of the old one? The only time I have heard of a PSS carbon seal having the potential to crack is when a DIY or yard replaces the plastic vent fitting with a metallic one... If your PSS is vented do not replace the plastic fitting with a brass, bronze or stainless one!!!

Thanks for the replys. I contacted someone else at PYI and they do still make the 5.5 inch PSS and are supposed to be sending it in 3 business days. This has been the Spring from hell. My fuel tank had pinholes and had to be replaced. The new one is in place, but still have t glass it in and replace the hoses. Wanted to wait until it was off the stands before glassing. Wishing you all fair winds and following seas...John
