Has anyone installed a dripless seal on your prop shaft? I would like to repalce my seal on my 30T this winter and would be interested in others experience, models used, etc.

Installing one today

on a H40.5 with 1 1/4 inch shaft and 2 1/2 inch stern tube. Cost was under $200. Hint: To remove the coupler from the shaft just remove the set screws and the coupler bolts, pull the shaft back a few inches, insert a deep socket smaller than the shaft diameter between the shaft end and the transmission coupling, using long bolts (or all tread and nuts) reconnect the shaft coupling to the transmission coupling, heat the coupling, cool the shaft, and start tighting the bolts one at a time, round and round the coupling until the shaft backs out. I really like the design of the PYI PSS shaft seal. For once a dry bilge!

Dripless Compound Used on H-33.5

Dennis, This past spring I bought and installed a 'Dripless' shaft stuffing box compound (about $55. at West Marine - Boat/US). It's a green compound. You use two flax rings (one first and one last)and put the green compound into the stuffing box between the flax 'retaining' rings then tighten down the end stuffing box nut. I found that it works great - no more dripping at shaft seal and the stuffing box does not get warm - shaft turns by hand (when shift is in neutral). I'm very satisfied with it - even though it's a little pricy. Dick S/V Puffin

PSS best way to go!!

Hi Dennis, I installed a PSS and shaft bearing on the last haulout for my bottom job. The PSS works Great!! No water leaking etc. However, several years down the road I'm not sure it's performance. Jim
