Dripless Packing Installation

In order to install a PYI dripless coupling I've removed the 2 set screws and 4 bolts holding the transmission/propshaft plates together and tried the socket and longer bolt method to push the prop shaft out of the coupling. The prop shaft has only moved about 1/4" despite all my attempts. I've liberally sprayed "PB" solvent in the appropriate places over the past couple of days and even tried "tapping" on the coupling with a small sledge hammer. Before I do something really stupid and break an engine mount or foul up the transmission I'd like to hear if anyone has had a similar problem and what they did to get their prop shaft free of the coupling.

Try This...

... heat the coupling with a torch, or, what I did that worked, get dry ice and pack the shaft in it near the joint. It should contract just enough to clear the flange. Good luck. You may need a combination of everything. Also, if you continue to have problems, leave the shaft rigged with the socket/long bolts under compression and go away for a week. It may release in the interim. Good luck. These can be frustrating. Rick D.

Thanks Rick; I got the prop shaft loose a couple of hours ago. Being an old aircraft carrier catapult and arresting gear officer I followed the advice of one of my division CPOs whose answer to a frozen part was usually a bigger hammer. Not really, but that helped along with a longer spacer and longer bolts. Now for the shaft polishing and reassembly which should be a piece of cake.

Even pressure is critical

Make sure that all your longer bolts are being tightened evenly (measure the exposed threads). If you tighten one adjacent pair more that the others, you are wedging the coupling tighter to the shaft. Even a very small difference may be the problem. Also, was the socket you used well centered and of a sufficiently smaller diameter to pass into the coupling easily? Good luck.
