Drilling through the panel

I have a 2004 Hunter 33. My wife would like to hang some cup hooks or install other hanging hardware on the thin panel around and above the microwave oven in the galley. The panel feel light and hollow to me so I am hesitant to drill and find out there is no way to insert a toggle bolt or some other anchoring hardware. Has anyone tried drilling through this panel to know thick it is and how much space there is behind it before hitting the other side of the cockpit? Anyone ever hang anything of any weight on that panel? Thanks.

Hanging in the 33

Oliver, I am hanging a TV this weekend and about to add some things in the galley as well (cup hooks and a paper towel holder to start). I am using 1/2 inch screw for everything. Not sure on the area above the micro. My 33 is a 2004 as well. Above the micro on mine is a small area of paneling and lots of white molding that is not strong. I am putting my tv above the nav station, on the bulkhead against the head (where we are adding toothbrush holders,...). Good luck. You should add some pix when you are done, it is always good to see ideas from other sailors.

Your Lucky Day

I'm sorry about the focus on this pic, but I believe it answers your questions. I took this pic of my 2005 H33 at the factory last month. I was interested in replacing the microwave with a toaster/convection oven/microwave so I had a particular interest in that area of the boat. My new oven WILL fit. My boat is scheduled to go in the water at 4:pM today. Exactly 6 weeks after I ordered it.

Duh

I didn't explain. The picture is taken from the stern. The box in the middle of the picture is the backside of the microwave enclosure. It was pretty cool to get to see how they did a lot of this stuff.

Hi Larry Do you have any other pictures of your 33 during construction? I am interested in how the AC duct work is routed.

Larry, Great to see the picture. Are the ducts for air conditioning? I wonder what the curved opening above the microwave is for. It is the weak white molding that my wife wants to hang things but I am nervous to drill because of the light weight feel to it. If you have other pictures of the construction of the 33, we would all appreciate some more insight as to what is behind what we normally see in the boat. Thanks again. You will love your boat. Oliver.

Sorry for the delay in answering. I've had things to do other than the Internet. This is NOT my floor pan, but it IS a 33 part.

This is not my boat, but I wanted this picture to show how they build the deck reinforcement. Notice all of the small blocks of wood that limit how far any rot could spread.

More of the "other" boat. The window on the right side will get the same reinforcing trim as the other one. You can see a lot more of those small wooden blocks.

I went back to the factory 6 days later and they already had the deck installed on the hull. The engine was in. All of the ports, hatches, cleats, winches, etc were installed. They would not allow me to take any pictures in that area of the plant. THe boat is now in it's slip and nearly ready to sail. I am very pleased with the quality of construction. Hunter included a lot of nice bonuses. When I installed the autopilot, I learned that the power leads had already been run from the electrical panel to the helm. The wind machine wiring had been run from the base of the mast to the helm. Hunter got it right!!!

Thanks for the pictures Larry. Good to know you have seen it built and impressed with it. Oliver.
