I lost the thread on this of a few weeks ago and want to bring it up again and ask a follow up question of those who know about this. I want to TRY the idea of using a rechargeable drill on my #44 main winch to raise my main that weighs billions of pounds. I ordered the bit that fits but then I am exploring the world of rechargeable drills and the totally-new-to-me concept of torque (other than that really bad joke we all heard in the 70s). I can get a 60 lbs torque drill for $40 or a 300-400 lb. torque drill for $100-300. I have no idea how much torque is needed. Does anyone know: is the 60 lb. torque drill enough?

Eric, I think your numbers are too high.

A drill with that much torque could only be held by a deck-ape. Even the governor of Kalifornia, in his prime would have had trouble holding on. Four hundred POUNDS at one foot distance is,,,well, 400 pounds. That's about what a good V8 engine makes.

Now let's work on your question.

A battery powered drill is making torque that is so low that it's probably rated in INCH POUNDS. Just divide by 12 for foot pounds. I powered the primary winch seen in the photo with a 1400 inch pound engine driven hydraulic motor. The winch is rated at 1200. Works great.

Eric,

after re-reading, I see that you don't mention FOOT lbs. Sorry. Of course, that's the key.

Cordless Drills

I have a H336 that I use a DeWalt cordless drill to raise the main when I am sailing solo. It raises the main all the way except the last foot or so. It is a 18V model with 500 inch pounds of torque. Theya have a new model that is 24v and higher torque. Milwaukee also makes a high power cordless drill.

Waddya mean an inch is not a foot?!??

Ok, I went back and looked at the Consumer reviews and the drills are stated in INCH pounds. So when I call back the manufacturer, this time I'll ask "60 what....Inches pounds?" Stay tuned
