Would you want to put tel-tails on a drifter? We have a new 150 drifter for our C-22 and we have not used it yet( just got it) It is 1.5oz nylon. Also if used down wind, up to what wind speed would this sail be able to be used? Thanks in advance Dale

Why a 1.5 oz drifter?? A drifter as it's name implies is for 'drifting' conditions. A 1/2 oz cloth would be much more appropriate for such light work. The wind range for these sails is up to about 8kts. It's not a down wind sail but rather for off wind (110 - 60) degrees.

Alan, Our feeling was the 1.5 oz would be more durable. We do not race, and we felt that the 1.5 could be used in a wider wind range than the .50 or .75 oz cloth. The 1.5 oz is light compared to our other sails. Time will tell if we were correct. Thanks Dale

A drifter has nothing whatever to do with racing. Racers NEVER use them. A spinnaker would be a far better choice for off wind work but a drifter is far easier to deal with for cruisers. The only reason I question the choice of cloth weight is that 1.5 oz cloth would tend to collapse under its own weight in very light air where a .5 or .75 will continue to fly. I own a 1.5 oz spinnaker but rarely use it. The .75 is the standard and will fly quite well up to 20kts.

Drifters are indeed used in racing!
Just ask the winner of the 2006 Newport to Bermuda race (much larger vessel was forcasted to win!). They championed the drifter as working when spinnaker and genoa would not. When speed dropped below 2.2 knots they hoisted the drifter and brought the speed back up to 4 or better, then they added other sails to gain control and speed.
