Time to show my ignorance. My boat has a 40 hp Yanmar. How do I drain the engine oil so I can replace it?

Due to the lack of clearance under most marine engines there is no drain plug in the oil pan, at least none that can be utilized. The procedure requires a evacuation devise to draw the oil out through the dipstick tube. Most marine parts retailers offer these of varying sizes as needed, this site may also. I built my own using a vacuum pump and a gallon can, crude but works with no mess.

I have a pump like kloudie links to from west marine. Very satisfied with it. I've also had one like Dave mentions which for me was an exercise in frustration. I could never get a good seal on the threads for the pump handle. :(

To change the oil you'll need a pump of your choice.
1 Run the engine for a few minuets to warm up the oi so it flows better
2 Feed a tube down the dip stick tube, Stop as soon as it bottoms out!
3 Pump it up and let the oil drain into the container.

If you have problems with the plastic tube feeding into the engine changing it out for a copper tube that will feed into the block works.

Very important to make sure the oil is warm/Hot so it flows out to what ever you use and I use a 12volt pump out with small container and not anything too big, mine is plastic and yes have changed the plastic tubing after many years and still use plastic tubing cheap from hardware store, mine did come with a 5 gallon can and was just too bulky for me so change to now using gallon jugs with my 12 volt pump.

This will sound like a no-brainer, but if it's time to change the oil, it's time to change the filter as well. I use a pump like Kloudie's link when at my home base and a small manual pump when traveling.
