My 1985 Hunter 28.5 seems to collect bilge water under the engine between the engine mount frame member. It is not obvious to me how this water is suppose to find its way into the forward bilge well where it will be pumped away. I am able to locate openings through most of the athwartship hull frame members between the engine and the bilge well, but not the one just in front of the engine. Is anyone familiar with where these openings are supposed to be located? Thanks in advance Bruce

Overboard Discharge Prohibited

The Engine Bilge isn't supposed to be connected to the main bilge or you automatic bilge pump could pump oily water overboard. Nice fines for doing so! Catch up on other 28.5 questions at: www.huntertwentyeightfive.com

Supposed to...

sop it up on your own with sponge, diapers, oil mats, etc. As Mr. Sauer says, THAT stuff is NOT TO BE PUMPED OVERBOARD...

Add another bilge pump

The engine bilge is separated from the main bilge so that oil from the engine may be collected and cleaned out. If your 28 is like my 33 there is a little drain space under this engine bilge pan to move the water from the stern to the main bilge. If you have a major leak, say in the stern tube like I did, the water is "dammed up" under the engine and can not flow to the main bilge to be pumped out. The best solution is adding a bilge pump in the stern to take care of excess water. This will not clean out the engine bilge. That is best done by hand. It will, however, make your boat safer.
