HELP!! My new daysailer has a drain hole (less than 1/2") just aft of the centerboard but no plug. I am wondering if there is a standard O'Day plug that I can purchase, because I do not look forward to having my husband bail as we sail.

Do you have a DS I or II? If it is as DS I the hole goes through to the water beneath the boat. If it is a DS II it would go into the inner hull space (bilge). If you can scan a post a picture, that would help. I am not sure of the purpose of this hole. It would depend on the model. The previous owner may have used it to suck water out of the bilge if it was a DS II. It if was a DS I, it may have been the hole for a self bailer, only the self bailer is missing. The DS have a self bailer, but it is typically placed near the back of the cockpit sole about an inch from the transom. The standard setup is a DePersia bailer. (see photo)

Cheap solution

I have a self bailing hole in my DSII. The bailer is missing though. So, as a cheap solution I used wine corks to plug the hole. THe drain plugs sold at boat stores are not the right size. My parents being big wine drinkers I have an endless supply of them. If you want you can expoxy a wooden dowel into the hole. I suggest having a manual bilge pump.

I have a 'sister ship' on the lake I sail on that also uses wine corks. He has a ziplock bag full of them on board. I also have a guzzler bilge pump mounted on the transom. (see link)

Drain repair

Hey, I just bought a Javelin. The price was right because of the drain I suspect. It is the drain in the picture above. SO - Clean the hole good. Use a piece of the water hose used for fresh water to a RV. It has the proper diameter to fit very tightly into the hole where you pull the old plug out. get the towell rack from Walmart (wood dowell 5/8 dia.) and It perfectly (snugly) fits the inside of the water hose. I floated mine today and was very satisfied. rfowlerhelen
