drain question

Has anyone added a screen of some sort to the cockpit drain? I flushed a lot of debris from mine yesterday. I wonder if a screened drain hole would be more or less likely to plug up. I'm thinking of some type of rounded screen that would have more surface area and would not get covered so easily. Any thoughts?

This works

Go to the grocery store, Bed,Bath, and Beyond or high end hardware store. They have 3 in. stainless steel mesh strainers for kitchen sinks that are heavy enough to stay in place and screen out big stuff before it goes down the pipe. I've always wished Roger M had used bigger pipe for drains since I have to park my X under 12 oak trees when it's on land.

Best bet is to make sure that the hose to the through hull is as straight as possible. No hard turns. I woudn't want to be cleaning a screen when I'm bailing a cockpit in a storm. Adding a second drain is a great improvement too. Otherwise you cockpit could become a large swimming pool if your pooped, and my boat isn't big enough for a pool. If your problem is leaves and junk from the trees when the boat is stored at home, the screens could be removed when you launch the boat. After cleaning out the junk.

Cock pit drain/anti backsplash

My fiance made a drain plug with a rubber flap on it that opens with minimal pressure. There is no splashing at all as there was with the screen system/drain basket system. K.
