There are three panels in the cabin flooring and I am wondering do these drain? I discovered a considerable amount of water on the boat cabin floor before putting the boat in the water. Thank you for your assistance.

Water in bilge

There is a bunch of info in the archives about this. A month or two ago there was much discussion about water here. The jist of it is it mostly comes in from outside the boat and it gets between the liner and ends up here. After I sealed everything up I have had very little water here. Hope this helps and check out the archives. Fair winds Rob Morton

The boat is not water tight from above!

Luckily, it is from below. Other sources of casual water in my H23 are: 1) The front hatch (you may have some water under the V-berth); 2) The anchor well (may need to check the hose and clamps on the drain); and 3) Water backing up under the companionway hatch. (The traveler track on my boat is solid, and the only way for rain water to drain from behind it is two small channels molded into the fiberglass. If those channels become clogged with dirt or debris, or if it is an exceptionally hard rain, water will back up and spill into the cabin before it overflows the traveler track. I have considered drilling some drain holes in the track, but haven't yet).

water in cabin

I'm also getting a considerable amount of water under my cabin flooring. It appears to enter from the first board closest to the bow while sailing? .I have installed a stop valve in my bilge pump hose which helped.I have cleaned the chanels on the hatchway, secured and tightened all hoses and clamps and sealed most areas above the water line. But I still don't know where the water enters from. The boats design does not seem allow the collected water in the cabin to enter the stern so the bilge pump can be used? I have also considered removing the keel nuts and sealing the threads but I'm convinced that is my problem.I'm fustrated please help. Sea Hook, Roy Santo Pietro

Cockpit drain & lower rudder gudgeon

Hey folks, Water entering the H23 is real common. Above the water line be sure and check the hose and fittings for the anchor well and cockpit drains. The cockpit drain hose, if cracked, will let in a LOT of water pretty quickly. Make sure the through hull isn't leaking too. It might be under the water line when you are loaded. You also want to check the lower mount for the rudder. Mine leaked badly. Even after tracking down and taking care of all of these problems I still get a little water inside through the lazarette hatch as it doesn't have the best design for drainage under a heavy downpour. After a day of high winds and sailing with the rail in the water a little always finds its way out from under the cabin flooring when she is heeled over severly. I just have to sponge it up as there really isn't any kind of a bilge in the cabin that you can put a pump on.
