Anyone else have a 25 with the bottom cockpit drain that clogs have a solution horizontal or a cage type leaf catch? The boat I just purchased for CHEap had filled with water, froze, and now the keel bolts leak a bit. I want to solve this isssue for good by going horizontal with the drain, but only after we replace teak, sand and polish everything etc.....

You may want to try putting some bronze wool in the drain. The problem with any of these solutions is when (whatever you put in there) plugs up. It just happens that they are plugged up in the cockpit instead of the drain hose.

Leave the drain alone.

The drain on the 25 works well with nothing to cover it at all. You need to flush it with a hose from both direction yearly and should have no problem with it. If it clogged it was because it was never cleaned out. Only thing to watch for is caps from beer bottles,2 cycle oil etc. These are close to the same size as the drain hose. These also will clean out with a reverse flush. Very simple maintenance, it the key.;)

Thank you for the input. Winter freezes it but I climb in and check it every week if we get precipitation. It sits on its trailer beside the man cave.

Contractor, your solution sounds like the prudent one. I always find that the boats that are most neglected during the winter months are those needing the most 'maintenance'. Most of all maintenance should be preventative, not reconstructive. ;)
