in 89 catalina made a change on the capri 18 from a shoal keel to a wing keel. is there a difference in draft between the two?

Actually, the wing was an option on the earlier Capri-18's for a while. Our 1988 Capri-18 had the wing. It was actually a fiberglass wing attached to the bottom of the shoal draft keel that is molded as part of the hull, then filled with lead and resin. Very strong, and never a worry about the hull-keel joint. The wing maybe added a few inches to the draft, what ever the thickness is of the wing. I was very pleased with the performance of the C-18 to windward. Some drifting at low speed and in light air, but once you got some water flowing over the foil, she locked in and was very effective.

don, thanks for the response. i have two capri 18 im considering, an 87 shoal keel and an 89 wing keel. the wing keel boat measures 93 " from the top of the bow pulpit to the ground sitting on the trailer (it must fit through an 8 foot door. i have yet to get the measurement from the 87. the boats are on different trailers so im sure that makes a difference. the 89 sits on a "hercules" trailer and doesnt appear to be sitting very low. the axle is the conventional straight type with 14" wheels. anyway you have answered my question and i appreciate that. i will be getting a capri18 move up from out com-pac 16 thanks steve
Steve, Given a choice, I would go with the wing version. Lot's of opinions, but I believe to wing helps to keep the water flow over the keel, like winglet's on aircraft. A couple inches shouldn't make that big of a difference, and I haven't had the issues folks talk about when running aground, that the wing will dig into the bottom like a Danforth anchor and cause issues to get free, but then again, I don't run aground, so what would I know....
Sailed on Carlyle Lake several times years ago with our original C-22. We had a slip on the Alton Pool, and when the Mississippi flooded, we would trailer over to Carlyle until the river went back down.
You'll be pleasantly surprised with the better performance and extra interior room going from the Compac-16 to the Capri.
