Does anyone have an opinion on which sailmaker produces the better sail, Doyle or Neil Pryde?

I'm not familiar with the Pryde sails

however, I did have a new head sail made for me by Doyle a couple of months ago. I looked at North Sails as well. Settled on Doyle because they had a loft locally, and would send out someone to measure for the fitting. North sails were made in the northeast and the time to turn one out was longer. I was hesitant to take the many measurments myself required by the many sail makers found on the 'net'. Very happy with the sail, and a great fit for my '82 -33ft. Jeff

Neil Pryde Sails are adequate but...

it depends on what you want to do with them. If you are more of a performance buff then having someone come out from a local loft is more the way to go - be it Doyle, North, Quantum, Ullman or whoever. They will have many more options for you to choose from, and after they are built they will sail with you and check it all out with you. If something is not right, and that does happen a lot, they will take them back and fix them. I, too, am purchasing a new racing genoa from Doyle right now and just bought a full set of sails from them last year for a Carrera 290 we race. We are actually buying it from the same loft as Jeff. I think the Doyle sails are great, but we are buying them mostly because of the service we get from the loft. But the Neil Pryde sails that came with my Hunter 23 when I bought it in 1988 were perfectly adequate for normal daysailing and cruising. They are usually much cheaper than going to the lofts because they are produced in mass, cut from templates and fitted by people who have never seen your boat and never will. So it just depends on what you really need and how much you want to spend.

Pryde or Doyle

Hmm, here in Seattle the Neil Pryde guy came to my boat, measured the boat for the assymetrical spinnaker, discussed the options, and then he went sailing with us to show us how to work it and make sure everything was as it should be. He also offered to meet us again later to fine tune our use if we wanted him to. We are happy with the quality of the sail we ordered. We went with Pryde for this sail simply because he was far more responsive and available than our local North loft at that particular moment in time. The variation in prices among the two lofts was minimal.

A Doyle Fan

I put new Doyle Genoa and Main on my O'Day 25 last year and was very happy with the sails, so much so that when I bought a new boat this year I had a jib made by Doyle prior to my delivery trip (355 miles). We have a local Doyle loft, and the service is very good. I have no first hand knowledge of Neil Pryde sails, but I think what is most important is the service you receive in your local area - much more important than price or delivery time is someone who will make sure the sails fit your boat and are suitable for the type of sailing you do. Think about it - if you buy a sail today and are a typical sailor, it will probably at least be in a sail bag on the boat (or someone's garage) 20 years from now. It's worth getting it right at the beginning.

Doyle good but

I had a new main and 135 w/ new CDI made for my 22 about 3 years ago by Doyle/Cleveland. I'm happy with the sails and service except he put the O'Day 22 logo and numbers on the mail sail with stick-on vinyl. The red numbers are coming off and part of one is now hanging from one of the spreaders. I'll send it back at the end of this season and he'll probably repair for free. Also, I had asked for the outer edges (leach, foot) of the 135 to be royal to match my main sail cover but it came with a white edge which I learned to live with. Best to put all instructions in writing. The sails are very well made.

TN...You got me

I stand corrected. It does appear that Neil Pryde sells their sails, around the country, through "agents" which are all listed on their website. And yes, there seems to be an agent right in your backyard to provide you with the service you got. I suppose my agent would be CB Sails, Inc. in Panama City and I doubt that he would come see me in Tampa for a new $2500 spinnaker. From the looks of his website he seems to be more into seling used sails and boat canvas anyway. Back to the analysis though - Neil Pryde has a reputation as a production sail builder, mass producing sails for large manufacturers like Hunter, Oday, Beneteau, and whoever. Their website claims that they have a large selection of performance related products, yet they distribute through companies like Hurricane Canvas and Sails, The Boathouse, FabriCraft, and Jack D. Scullion Yacht Services. I know I shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but seriously how can you campare this company to companies like Doyle, Ulman, Quantum, and North who are supported, owned and run by some of the best sailors in the world? Again, it is all about what you need. Can you be perfectly happy with a Neil Pryde sail for cruising or daysailing, and maybe a little club racing - absolutely. There is nothing wrong with these sails. But if you are a performance oriented sailor, looking for a more serious product, would you rather buy from a guy like Mark Ploch or would you rather buy it from Quality Sail and Canvas Repair in Ingleside Texas?

Pick the Sailmaker

who will come to your boat and do precision measurements. Discuss the uses of the sail--cruising, racing, both? What materials? Price you can pay? UV covers and/or custom sail covers? All known brands can produce fine sails. The one that is custom fitted to your boat will be the one that is best.
