Stack Pak

There are many sailmakers that offer the stack pak style mainsail cover. We were in Trinidad in the summer of 2002 and we had Barrow Sails of Trinidad make ours.It costs $900 but has all the latest thinking and options. 1st, the bottom of the stack pack is mounted on the sides of the boom in aluminum tracks instead of the sail track on the top of the boom. There are 2 advantages to this. One, the bottom of the bag is about 6" wide intstead of narrowing to a vee. Two the stack can be removed without removing the sails and vice versa. 2nd, the lazy jacks attach to a small webbing strap that wraps around the built-in round battens at the top of the bag. This prevents the pressure of the lazy jacks from pulling the webbing off the bag. 3rd, we asked for both a zipper and an overlapping flap secured with twist-type fasteners along the top of the bag. Hindsight shows that the zipper is not necessary and we could have saved the money spent on the zipper. 4th our bag has a separate cover that goes around the front of the mast and attaches to the bag in a very smooth shape. It looks very nice when installed. As for function, we usually just leave the top zipper open all the time and just release the twist snaps when we want to raise the sail. The bag stays up all the time while sailing, but could be relaxed if we wanted it to. The open bag catches the sail when you take it down much better than just lazy jacks alone. Then just snap the twisties and the sail is protected. Our boat is a 1986 Hunter 45 and has a 16 foot boom. Our stack pak saves us a lot of effort. If you have any other questions, just ask.
