I have a 2004 Hunter 41 with an in-mast furling system. I began racing my boat this season. The boat does well on most points of sail except going upwind. As expected, it points terribly. I spoke with the local Doyle sailmaker who gave me a few recommendations including vertical battens and a drop down batten system. Before considering this expense, does anyone have experience with these types of sails? Is it worth it or am I best off considering upgrading my boat to a drop down main with full battens if I wish to continue racing?

Doyle also makes a permanent vertical batten sail call the Zenith. This is the one I would recommend. It's bigger than the stock sail and you'll get much better performance from it. I have it on my 356 and I'm happy with it.

The sail area you state sounds low are you sure 418 is correct.
