I was out the other day running with the wind when I noticed that the main was being poked by the swept-back upper spreader of my 1992 H28. The main was only about half way out. Is there a sail trim secret to changing the sail shape so I can let the main out more? Does the key involve the use of my boom vang?

Nope

Unfortunately, that is a major disadvantage of this rig. W/o the backstay and sweptback spreaders, the sail can only be let out about half way.

vang

The vang can help. A rule of thumb is to crank on it until the aft end of the top batten is parallel to the boom. That may allow you to let the boom out a little more. Wear patches on the sail where it contacts the spreader end helps also.

What PAC says is correct. The vang will allow greater surface area exposed to the wind for better power. Spreader patches will certainly help the chafe problem. The vang will help keep more of the main off the spreaders as the sheet is eased.
