I am thinking of getting a Cal 39 but I was wondering if it has as good downwind performance as a Cal 40? I know the hull speed on a 39 is higher but does anyone know any details as to downwind speeds? Thanks Dave
The downwind speed of both the Cal 39 & 40 are superior to most other sail craft of this size. I believe that the propeller and bottom preparation would determine which is fastest. You are probably aware that the Cal 40 still holds the speed record from Long Beach, CA to Hawaii, and that was under a significant portion of downwind sailing.
