You run an 1/8" line from the cockpit through some blocks usually attached to your stations to a block attached to your tack point. The end of the line is attached to the top hank. Some attach it to the head of the sail but I found that it tends to bend the head over and binds a little. When you raise the jib the downhaul will be pulled up with the sail. When you erase the Hayward the down haul will pull the sail down. There are some variations that run the line through the clew which is supposed to gather and bunch the jib up to the pulpit.

Found some picts for you . In the first you can skip the clips or run the line through a couple of hanks. The second pict gathers the sail.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I read what I posted and could not believe how Siri (iPad) spelled down haul.
