We are interested in a down wind sail for our Catalina 22. Is there such a thing as a hank on A-sail? We are thinking that it might be easier to sail then a standard A-sail? We do not have roller furling so we thought this could work fine. Thank you and looking forward to all answers.

Paphman, On my 80 C22 I had the standard 150, a tri radial spinnakker and a asymetrical spinnaker that was an actual Catalina asymetrical spinnaker. The asymetrical was poorly designed and basically useless. The other two performed as expected.
On the 82 San Juan 23 I now sail I have a tri-radial spinnakker and a 153 genny. Both work as expected.
But then.....I have a drifter that is 1.5 oz nylon and about 170 percent in size and hanks on. These type of sails open up a whole new wind range to play with. They are fairly robust but care must be taken when tacking or jibing (sp)that they don't hang up and rip. There are mylar sails and other combos of fabric that do the same but are expensive. Used sails of this type are usually fairly used up and not worth messing with. The only reason mine are so good is that the previous owner never used it. If you plan to keep your boat then buy new.
Now off this subject as I must throw in a tidbit that is the most fun I've ever had with a wind boat. I have been teaching friends and neighbors how to sail for the past 4 years. This summer I have been given two dingy's and trailers that the original owners never used. Both are 13 to 14 foot Capri's that were made by Catalina. One is an Omega and one is a Cyclone. The Omega has a jib and main. The Cyclone is cat boat rigged. Both have HUGE mainsails. These boats are so fast that the 23 has been parked unless we overnight and need food and beverage. If the thrill of performance is still fun then this is the way to go. Both of these boats were bought for $200 or less in the past year. So far the only crew I've raised is one of my grandsons. The rest of the family must not be able to swim. Oh well, somethings are too good to share!
