I was thinking about installing a down haul for my main sail so I don't
need to send someone to the fore deck to help it down. Does anyone
have any experience on how well it works?
Thanks

I sail our P42 solo most of the time and each season use a spray can dry lubricate on the main sail slugs. It then will drop like a rock if I let it, so I'm puzzled by the need for a main down haul. WM and most other marine supply houses will carry this lubricate. It also helps to clean and lubricate the track with the same product.

I agree, Terry.. Clean and lube the track and the slugs and it should slide right down. Make sure the main sheet is running free at the mast top sheave and other sheaves and stoppers. The sheaves may need cleaning and lube too.

Actually, the value of a main downhaul is to secure the sail when conditions are rough and it is not safe to send someone to the mast to tie down the headboard. That is the need for it.

Yes, it should work pretty well for what you want it for. It will work the same in calm conditions as well as rough ones and it does help to lube the track. The question is what do you have to catch the sail?
