beneteau 38 m dock
We have just purchased a 1991 Beneteau 38M, a few questions.
Do I leave the batteries switched on all the time?
When I connect shore power do I need the batteries switched on to keep them charged?
I do have a manual but these questions are not really clarified.
I also have a cabin door with a latch that doesnt work, how do I get parts?
One strange thing I have noticed is that there is no gas gauge up top, only be the
batterie switch's, should I extend that so I can see it from helm area?
thanks for help

I am assuming you have two batteries. We turn on both when starting the engine and turn one off when cruising.
I leave one battery on with the shore power on just to make sure the bilge can operate if needed. I am assuming that is correct.
Not sure which cabin latch doesn't work. Inside the galley? It is broken or just needs adjustment? You can get parts by contacting Beneteau USA Parts. Ward Richardson is person I spoke with last.
The gas gauge is a mystery. Where is your gas gauge? Near the engine? It would be nice to have at the helm.

Thanks for the battery info-there is no info or marker saying which battery is which so I just left them all on and the nr 1 bilge on. As for the latch, I was able to unroll the broken spring one loop and that gave me enough to rebend it to the shape to make it work.
Next is tackling the pre-survey list of the stuff that needs fixing. I have a sailing friend coming over to at least identify the areas the list has. Also looking at the Harkin mainsail rollers to make raising the sail easier, the skipper had one heck of a time raising the main on my boat when delivering it.Even with the crank on the winch.

On your battery situation - the manual should describe which switch is for house, engine etc. if not - fairly easy to follow the red wire back to the battery. The bilge pump should be wired directly to the battery and should rely on a switch being on. You can test this by turning all battery switches off and operating the float switch for the bilge pump. There should also be a switch on the panel for the bilge pump but that requires 12v to be on.

I sail with the engine battery off. However note that batteries should never be turned on or off while engine is running - you'll ruin the alternator.

On your sail situation I had install harken batt cars on my previous boat - an oceanis 38. On my current 423 the sailmaker recommended Strong Track by Tides Marine. Similar to Harken but a lot less expensive. Both work well and made a big difference in raising the main - as well as lowering it.

Thanks for the help, I have a feeling I might be needing more advice. I will do the tracing
thing to identify the batteries. I also will check on the Strong Track vs Harken, if I can acheive the same with less expense the better. Gives me more to spend on something else.
