If you are talking about a roller furling main,

the donut goes between the shackle on the outhaul car slide and the end of the mainsail. It should not travel freely, it gets sandwiched between the end of the mainsail and the outhaul car.

thanks, i replaced shackel and tied a bowline when i replaced line. im guessing donut prevents wearage of shackel and metal corner of mainsail?previous owner has donut on upper line of furler and it does nothing. thanks alan

I have a 1999 furlex on my boat (Hunter 410)-- I will try to scan the set up diagrams and post them to you.....

Sorry -- mine is set up without the doughnut - I think mine is a 1998 Selden Furlin' model.....

the diagram attached is pretty good detail for the entire setup.
