I listed my 1986 Newport 30 for sale 8 months ago. Initial listing price was $19,999. I have lowered the price to $15,000. No interest. The slip fee is due in February and we are not using the boat. We did have a great weekend sail last weekend. The boat is in at least average condition excepting blisters. I will not pay an additional slip fee. I am considering donating it but have more questions than answers starting with who accepts donations. The boat is at Herrington South on the Chesapeake.

The maritime museum at St. Micheals will gladly take it .

Just try reducing the asking price 1000 dollars per week until some one takes it.

There is a group called Safe Harbor...

...in the Jacksonville, FL area that uses boats to house folks that have had problems in life. The better you do you move up from living on a boat with several people to living on one yourself as a reward.
I am pretty sure they take boats.
If you want I can get some info on them.

I believe they have an auction in the spring of donated boats. they also have slips at the museum where they keep boats until the sale.

BoatAngel

There's an organization called Boat Angel which uses the contributions toward charitable causes. A buddy of mine purchased a boat from them a couple of years ago. Here's their web address...

Tax law

You may wish to look at the tax code. I think that it has changed now and you can no longer claim book value as a deduction. Now you can only write off what they actually are able to sell it for from a transaction that is now beyond your control. What if they ebay it (boatangel frequently does) for $3000? From the link below:

In Notice 2005-44, the IRS and Treasury explain rules adopted in the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004, which (1) generally limits the deduction to the actual sales prices of the vehicle when sold by the donee charity, and (2) requires donors to get a timely acknowledgment from the charity to claim the deduction.

Donors may claim a deduction of the vehicle's fair market value under the following circumstances:

*
The charity makes a significant intervening use of the vehicle, such as using it to deliver meals on wheels.
*
The charity makes a material improvement to the vehicle, i.e., major repairs that significantly increase its value and not mere painting or cleaning.
*
The charity donates or sells the vehicle to a needy individual at a significantly below-market price, if the transfer furthers the charitable purpose of helping a poor person in need of a means of transportation.
