Sail trim seems a little slow right now - many of us are crying in our tinney - no sailing for a few months, boats out of the water, laid up for winter. Sail trim per-se is a little hard to focus on when there are no sheets to trim for a while. I'd suggest the following as winter subjects: Rigging for sail trim, articles and discussion on mods, how-tos with photos would be really great - photos do a good job to stoke the imagination. The Garhauer adjustable genny blocks, or a discussion and examples of various traveller arrangements come to mind as subject material. Discussion of sails: Genny sizes, a how-to on choosing a sail inventory for different types of sailing. Reef points, how many? Full vs. partial vs. no batten sails; which to choose and why, with the impact of the decision on sail trim given. Which sail options to get and impact on trimming (opinions on draft stripes, cunningham) . This is a time of year when many sailors may consider a new wardrobe, thus sail selection and impact on sail trim might make a good topic. I don't suggest trying to take on all of these at once - just that in winter articles from time to time on subjects like these may generate more interest - something we frozen sailors can relate to. Have you bought a new boat yet? Moving up is a winter project for me, I can't sail now so thinking of how to be set up better for next year is where it's at. Cheers, OldCat

OldCat gets my vote…

… and I wonder how he's right so often! For example, the picture Don posted of his external outhaul got me started on installing a similar system on my boat. (Didn't entirely work and needed mods - but more of that if we get a rigging conversation going during the off-season). Likewise: with the way my mainsheet is rigged, vis a vis my tiller, I see no possibility of installing a traveller on my Cal 20. And I still want one! So OldCat's "different traveller arrangements" would be great for me: maybe there's a possibility I haven't thought of. So those of us whose boats don't have their full complements of cunninghams, outhauls, travellers and vangs - not to mention adjustable backstays - could get a lot of value out of this. (BTW: my boat had none of the above! Does now!) Dick

Great Idea

Oldcat, This sounds like a great idea. But where is Wonmop, CO?

Cheers!

Gee - thanks guys for the support! Charisma: I guess that I am surprised that nobody noticed the "Wonmop" before. When we moved to CO, my middle son, before he was Whitecap Jeff for his love of whitecaps, was a 2 year old. As is with 2 year olds, words sometimes come out a little different than they go in - so Longmont became Wonmop in the family vernacular. I added it to the tag as a bit of Dad humor, in honor of my most enthusiastic little sailor. OT: How do you like Lake Pueblo? It is one the lakes that I need to look into if I go bigger (25-28'). What do you sail there? Cheers, OldCat
