If most of you are like most sailors I know, having dolphins swimming around your boat can really make for a beautiful day and a great experience. To keep them around a bit longer, turn off your depthsounder if it's safe to do so, i.e., you know you are in deep water and will be in it for awhile. Dolphins also enjoy snacks, so I sometimes bring along some frozen fish food like shrimp or mackerel for them. They enjoy this and tend to hang around the boat a bit longer... MC

are you aware :)

Feeding dolphins can be very expensive; Boat US just published an article in there monthly magazine. Something about 20,000.00 and possible jail time. You might want to look into that before you publish it the world that you are actively engaged in this pastime!

DON' STOP THERE

While you're at it, why don't we throw in the lawyers too? Sorry if I offended any SAILING type lawyers.

Up here in the Great Lakes...

There is nothing more beautiful than a whole school of smelt swimming along with your boat! Ya know, i's legal to feed 'em, so I just toss 'em a 12 pack of Leinenkugel's beer, some string cheese, and some crackers. Never can figure out how them little critters get beer caps off. They're small fish, so after drinking the beer they are well tanked up, so I unplug the transducer, hook up a speaker and let them little buggers listen to the Dead. Kinda make s you said when you bread 'em and fry 'em.

I truly had no idea - why is that? I guess I better not do it again... MC

True.

Michael, It is obvious that you appreciate them and have only good intentions. I love seeing them in the wild! Unfortunately, there are those that exploit these curious creatures which can have devastating results. Follow the link below. www.n-jcenter.com/1998/Jul/6/EN1.htm Mark Kissel Kittiwake/98H240

16' eels

Here on lake Winnipesakee the dolphins are too slow to swim along side the boat so you rarely see them. We do, however have 16' long eels that come around to feed when we're anchored out in a cove and snatch a kid if your not watching. That's why we always sail with dogs onboard, they love Poodles.....
