Two dolphins wake surfed alongside the boat for more than a mile today. This is at least ten times as long as I've ever seen them stay with the boat before. One of them had propeller scars on its back and they seemed somewhat competitive so perhaps testosterone plays a similar role in dolphin behavior as in young humans.

All the cool tween dolphins have propeller scars on their back.
Didn't you know?
It's how you impress the females with your war wounds. :)

Or perhaps it was a "triple-dog-dare" to rub up against a sailboats spinning prop?
Because as we all know once the triple dog dare has been implemented it must be carried out.

Saw a dolphin in Matagorda Bay that was scarred up.

This guy got hit hard. I was surprised he survived the experience. That's a very large hunk of meat taken out of the rear of his fin.

One young dolphin got too close to the big bull that was leading the pod riding on our bow wave. The big guy swung his tail to the side and I heard a "smack", and the little guy took off back where he came from. Teenager out of line, perhaps?

roger, I looked at your "spot" track. Pretty deep into Florida for a guy who was going to stop at the Georgia border.

Like many of you I have lots of photos of dolphins playing with the boat. I find it interesting that we have such a fascination with the animal. My first experience was many years ago, my first trip to the Morehead City/Beaufort area of NC. We drove up to Harker's Island to take the "ferry" out to Cape Lookout. The ferry was an open Boston Whaler with about a 50hp Johnson. Well on that short ride out the dolphins actually came in over the gunwhales for a handout. They were so used to being fed by the tourists. Our guide had forgotten the fish! They're smart, didn't hang around long once they knew there was no food. (Pic in Gulf off Port Richey)

Naturalists and Marine Biologists here in SW Fl identify dolphins by thier scars. Track them to study migration and permanent residents.

I't's me. I'm out of the hospital, with a new defibrulator implant. Can't drive for a week, or lift my left arm above my shoulder for 2 weeks. Don't know now what the future holds, but the doctor said after 1 month I can do whatever I want. May still go cruising for the rest of the year, may short cruise and spend lots of time at the gym building endurance and loosing weight.

Really neat kritters ! We often see them on the northern Gulf of Mexico and have encountered them a couple hundred miles out in the gulf. It is kinda unusual when we don't see 'em once out of the Pontchartrain; they do wander into the lake sometimes but not normally. Once, we encountered a mom herding a small youngster (maybe 20"long) into the bow wave, apparently teaching him how to ride the pressure front.
