Recently while out in San Diego bay near the east end of Harbor island, my wife & I watched 2 men in a RIB doing tricks with a dolphin. Dolphin was retriving a frisby and jumping on command. We watched for 20 minutes as they entertained us. Then the guy who must have been the trainer slapped the side of the RIB and the dolphin jumped INTO the RIB and stayed there. The 2 men waved to us then sped off toward Pt. Loma and the open ocean with the dolphin in the boat. It was amazing. I assumed they may have been with seaworld, but why they where in SD bay I dont know.

Maybe Navy Seals?

They train there and use dolphins for detection and demolition, as I recall. Rick D.

Probably not Navy

Back in the late 60's early 70's I was involved in Dolphin research that worked with the Navy and their search and retrieval program. Having the dolphins jump, splash and make noises was strictly prohibited. We wanted the dolphins to be as quiet and unnoticed as possible. More can be found in the Jacque-Yves Cousteau book "Dolphin" under the chapter "Dolly" and in the childrens book "The Story of Dolly" Harry Asbury on s/v Dolly Phynne

Not Sure if They are SEALs

But it does sound like the Navy guys. They use them to mark mines, to find divers and to carry video cameras to do searches but they do not place or carry any sort of weapons.

See the link below. Btw...the story has a happy ending.
