If you had all had money in the world and were going to purchase a true ocean going yacht (but between 26'-44')what would you buy?

Newporter Ketch

Probably an old Newporter Ketch at 40 feet! It probably wouldnt take all of the money in the world, but they are still pretty expensive, the few I have seen for sale! Several circled the globe!

Mason 44

Made the mistake of getting on one of these last spring. Big money, though.

Shannon 43

If I had the money, I would get a Shannon 43. Based on what I have read, its the ultimate long distance passage maker that is easy to sail short handed. It's a semi-custom yacht made in Rhode Island. I would order the Scutter rig in cutter configuration with the keel centerboard hull, then I would set sail for Tahiti via Hawaii. Fair Winds, Clyde

ALL sailboats are a compromise.....

And if I had all the money in the world I would probably have one custom made to my specifications ---- But if you are talking about "production Sailboats" Then I would narrow it down to a Gozzard 41 For the traditionalist in me ---Though possibly too slow for me (http://www.gozzard.com/main/g41/g41_frameset.htm) And how could you ever leave out beautiful crafted boats like an Alden 43, Little Harbor or Hinckley 42-44 --- but because these boats are so beautiful they almost belong in a museum not on the open ocean (http://www.aldenyachts.com/new_sail/ay43.htm) (http://www.thehinckleyco.com/yachts/sw42.html) And how can you forget these extremely well made and blue water ocean proven european classics like a Hallberg-Rassy 43 an Oyster 42 (http://www.hallberg-rassy.se/hr43/hr43.shtml) (http://www.oystermarine.com/oyster42.html) But personally....I don't know what it is, but something draws me to a Hylas 46 (I know I know you said up to 44 feet But ......) --Maybe its just the way this boat is setup and the accomodations it would afford me.....and its still a very nice looking boat http://www.hylasyachtsusa.com/46/index46.html

Great Looking Boats!!

Tom, I like the Hinckley sailboats also. The Sou'wester 42 is a great sailboat, I also like Hinckley's Bermuda 40. The Hylas 46 is a great sailboat, but I like a traditional aft cockpit sailboat instead of a center cockpit sailboat. What I like about the Shannon 43 is the different sail plan choices available. I like the fact that they design their boats for a long distance cruising couple or for a single handling sailor. They have that traditional look, which I also really like. Clink on the link. Older Morgan

Although a bit dated, my favorite in your length range for long distance sailing was always the Morgan Out Island Ketch 414. Although the center cockpit is small, on a long passage I like the roomier staterooms, the walk-through to the aft stateroom and an engine room you can get into.

Clyde, Looks nice...

and I like the idea of a keel centerboard which to me represents the best compromise. Because if you cruise there is always the chance of grounding. My only comment is I've heard that this arrangement could potentially cause problems and/or noise, vibrations. Sooo...If I had all the money in the world, I would have someone come up with a bullet-proof design to allow for quick and easy centerboard usage, that would cause no noise and could run into a reef and still cause no damage. ps....I like the prop in the aperature also

Silver Phantom

Saw a Silver Phantom 44 at the Newport Boat Show. Pretty much semi-custom (with a big emphasis on custom). Modern looking boat that looks like it could go fast. Made out of New Zealand. The other one I like is a Outbound 44. A lot like a Saga, but not quite as radical. Lot's of tankage and will do 8+ knots in a fresh breeze. Others I like are Moody 42, Hylas 46, and the Shannon (very pretty). Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560
