Dog on boat

Check the archives, you'll get lots of hits on this subject. As noted, training at home is the key. You don't want them to try to figure it out on their own. Dogs want to please you. When I say "go pottie" and point to the spot, my dog knows exactly what I mean and gets praised for complying. Even if nature is not calling at that moment, she'll do "doggie dip" just to show she's trying.

Peter, what Mike is really saying is

PROVE IT! We want to see a picture. We think it's impossible. At least without AI. Sorry, that's 'horse talk' for Artificial Insemination.:)

Not exactly Fred

I have a daschund beagle mix, which I take on my C22. I have a doggie vest, with a tether to keep her aboard. She seems to like the boat and is very comfortable moving about. i day sail, and have'nt had her want to "go" while on board. I wasn't questioning Peter, just really curious about what his pup looks like.:)

take the lawn along

I recently sailed from New Orleans to Florida and back on my Hunter 34. I purchased a dog box. Simular to a cat box only larger. I filled the box with grass sod from my back. The box was secured using bungie chords in front of the dodger. It took two days and the dog started using the box at will.

Dogs on Boats at ALL?

Ya love your pets. Our family had a series of wonderful canine friends. They're great friends - on land. Your pet-techniques work for you at home. You and your spouse work together at your boat. How come you don't ask how to get your spouse on and off the boat? Why are there ANY questions at all about dogs on boats? If you want the pet on board, why ask anyone else how to deal with (it/she/him/it/they)? You can pooper-scoop on land. Why not on your boat? What's the big deal? And... This forum has great archives: Try: Dog, Pets, etc. [well, maybe not etc.] *5 Enjoy your pets, bring them on board, but pleeeze, do some reading and employ some commonsense. Golly other people MUST have brought pets on-board before. And, wow some of them probably brought 400 Labradors on 22 foot sailboats. Shoulda let the dog run the boat! Happy New Year. Woof woof.........

To ike re: Dachs/Lab

Unfortunately, I don't have a photo I can post. Selkie is a rescue, so we don't know the geneology. But she has the head, muzzle and ears of a dachs, and the coloring and coat of a lab. She also loves the water like a lab, and loves your lap, like a dachs. The vet thinks she's dachs/lab too. She also has VERY STRONG hind legs, which would make sense if the father was the dachs. (He'd have had to do some highjumping to consumate the relationship.) She weighs about 25 lbs. A perfect boat dog!

Dog on a boat no problem

I have been living aboard my 44 foot sloop for seven years with my pit bull dog. She is a great sailing dog. She know to lounge on the low side against the cockpit wall in rough weather goes up the transom ladder from the dingy and is very at home on extended cruising trips. When a trip to shore is a hassle or inconvenient, I have a mortar pan I fill with sod, sort of like a mini lawn in a big catbox. Dog uses it on command. Remember dogs just want to please their owners, they follow orders better than most crew and adapt better than you think. When I sold my house I wasn't sure if the dog who at the time was 4 years old, was going to be able to adapt or get up and down the companionway ladder. To my surprise the dog took to the boat better than my wife did. You won't have a problem with a smart water liking dog like a lab.
