The dog will soon be joining us sailing the chesapeake in the Herring Bay area. Does anybody know of any good resources for finding dog friendly marinas and anchorages?
Thanks

Most marinas I have visited it is more a matter of friendly dog welcome marinas. I can't recall any marina that didn't have at least one dog hanging out.

Let's cut to the chase. Many beaches and islands ...

... have been ruined by dog walkers that don't clean-up. Low Island is a near by example, though the geese are as much to blame. Often there is a steady stream of dingies ferrying poches to the island so they can do their business. Small wonder very few landowners are open to dogs walking the shorline.

Though I know it is great to let a dog run, dogs and swimming beaches are inherantly incompatible. This is obvious. Clean-up doesn't change that. It's not what you want to spread your towel over. In part, this reasoning is also why Herring Bay is Zero Dischage Zone.

So while I am certainly not anti-pet, dog walking near the water is alway going to be a problem. Marinas are generally friendly. Using beaches is very poor form.

I don't think this is what you were suggesting. It just came to mind, having just visited a soiled beach.

https://www.pottypatch.com/default.aspx?id=&refcode=1002 !!!!!!!!! Even older dogs usually 'take' to the potty patch without problem. If you train your dog to 'go/pee on command', an easy to do training .... such training to a potty patch is infinitely easier, even old/older dogs.

Great for long passages, no need to stop and 'find a spot' every 12± hours, easily cleanable .... no more wild dinghy rides when its 'dark and stormy'. Of course every dog needs exercise and my pooches always get to go the beach whenever possible.

In Maryland property rights end at the mean high tide line .... all the uncovered 'land' between the high tide line and the bay are 'public' (when the tide is out). Just clean up after so we keep this 'right'.

There are plenty of places. St Michaels is very dog friendly. Lots of places to walk and the dinghy dock gives easy access. Weems Creek up the Severen River is good. There is a boat ramp not far and you can walk them there. Up Middle river there is a public park and boat ramp that is good for a walk.

Ours is a small dog but we have had few issues with finding places to take him. He loves hopping into the dinghy and standing up with the breeze blowing by. Just make sure you clean up. We have some plastic bags that you can pick up the debris and turn inside out for disposal.

There are lots of dog friendly places. We just expect owners to clean up after their pets. Failure to do so has closed previously open private property to all of us.
