Does your jib go right to top of furler?

I'm just having a new jib made. The old jib wasn't tall enough to reach all the way up the furler. It had a 12" or so wire strop attached between its head and the jib halyard. Can I have some feed back as to other H30 88-94s? I'd like to have a full hoist jib (one that uses all the forestay length) but I'm worried about why that strop was there - maybe to stop the sail fouling the top spreaders? You can just about see a strop or something on te original brochure. Do I have to have something similar?

Jib Location

I have a 1990 H30 G, and my origional jib is within 6" of the eye at the mast. I don't see how I could achieve much in the way of height on the jib. Several time I have tried to obtain a 130 genoa, and the frustratin of everyone coming up with totaly different measurments made me give up the quest and stay with the jib I have. Jim

RF Genoa Hoist

Patrick, A strop or pennant on an RF Genoa is a pretty standard Item. It is used to allow the head swivel of your furler to be as close as possible to the mast head to avoid a possible halyard wrap. Cruising Dacron RF Genoas, are rarely cut for max luff length. The reason is that Dacron sails will stretch with use. If deductions for stretch are not taken when your new sail is built, you will eventually have to have the sail recut after a few years when the sail has stretched to where you can no longer get adequate halyard(luff) tension. Some sails are cut with short luff lengths, by owner request, to permit a pennant at the tack so the sail does not wear on the pulpit or life lines. Talk to your Sail Consultant about your specific needs. Not all sailcloth will stretch the same, and cloth weight will have a bearing on stretch as well. I hope this answers your questions.

Pat, none of my jibs go to the top.

I have a differnt lenght strap for each jib. If the jib when to the top of the furler you couldnt tighted up the luff. Ted

You know Patrick,

I wouldn't worry about it. Contact your sailmaker and ask. They will give you measuring instructions. Tell them that you want to get rid of the pennant. It serves only one purpose and that is to place the upper swivel close to the top of the foil to prevent a wrap of the halyard. Your boat will look more 'proper' without it. I can't speak for luff stretch. Only that I've never heard of a properly fitted luff tape stretching far enough to cause problems.
