Does this photo may my aft look bad?

My stern is sitting lower in the water than I think it should be. Here is the background. I have owned the boat for 2 years. Photo of the hail port of San Antonio was taken prior to purchase. Water tank on port side was empty and fuel tank half way. Not much in the way of gear in the aft locker or below in quarter berth.

Photo with Kemah hail port from this weekend. I noticed algae at stern waterline (bottm job 2 months ago). Stern is sitting just above water. Water tank and fuel tank are full. still not much gear in the aft locker (small danforth anchor, dock lines). Also looked at similar year H31's & 34's in my area and they don't appear to be sitting this low on the stern end.

I have a dripless shaft seal so shouldn't be stuffing box related and have not seen any water in the engine compartment and my main area bilge is dry. I have checked thru hull fittings and these are all dry with no signs of leaking. Same for engine water pump/raw water intake and other hoses. Checked starboard compartment for exhaust hose leakage around muffler box and all is dry.

In addition to this, I am now seeing water in a sump area below the step grate in the cabin (and in front of the engine) . I am starting to think these may be related.

Does this appear to be "normal" for H31/34's of this age group? Am I worrying about something that is not a concern?

I am thinking I may have water trapped in some interior spaces and this is causing the stern to sit lower and is now starting to show itself in this sump area. Not sure how it got there and if this is the situation and also not sure how to remove. I have read posts about drilling in the main bilge area but am really uncomfortable with drilling holes in areas I can't see into.

is this typically how H31's sit in the water? any thoughts on what this may be or have any other Hunter owners encountered this situation? Is there somewhere to insert a hose section to a suction pump to pump out water trapped in hidden areas? All comments, suggestions, thoughts are appreciated.

Jerry

Cant really see the boot stripe but if it is the same distance from it to the water all the way around the boat, and the white line under it is showing, you have no problems. Is your forward water tank full? Do you have a lot of stuff in the lazerette? Could be this. One thing I noticed from your picture of the aft keel bolt. It looks as though part of the trangular washer is missing or broken off and the rib behind it looks cracked. I think I would look into that a little closer. Cheers

Unfortunately no, the boot stripe is not the same distance from it to water all the way around. Forward tank is for waste and is empty. Lazarette locker has minimal gear stowed there. thanks I will look into the keel bolt washer.

Jerry: I think about 300 ft of chain in that anchor locker should do the trick.

But to be serious my 85 H31 was the same.

I think she has a nice aft. Should squat nicely when underway.

Looks

absolutely normal to me. Including the asymetrical keel bolt washer. I don't believe hunter was too concerned about the precise shape of keel bolt washers.

Re: Looks

Looks higher than mine but I have a full water tank and an anchor and chain in the lazarette. The washers in my boat are all odd shapes also. Search TR6's post on opening the "false" bilge to truly empty the hull of water. This past weekend I inavertantly pulled the plug out off the ice box and several gallons of water went down between the liner and the hull down to this opened bilge area

I have the same hole drilled next to the keel bolt. I started to get concerned when water appeared out of that hole. I did some research and decided
To drill a small hole in the bilge area. (very scary) I'm glad I did. 2 gallons of water drained out of that hole. I looked everywhere for my leak also.
Mine leak was port side cockpit drain tube fiberglassed into the boat. Every time the boat splashed at the stern it would take on water. I couldn't see the water coming in because it was leaking in between the hull and the liner. Hope this helps.
