Does the H240 Need a Gin Pole to Raise the Mast

You can tell its spring as all us new owners seem to be having trouble raising the mast. Supposedly I have all the equipment the deceased previous owner had with the boat but I don't have a Gin Pole but I do have a CDI roller furler which confuses me as I read the on line instructions I have found. Do I need a gin pole to raise the mast? Or is there some other way since I have a furler?

YES

Unless you can get enough help to lift it up to at least 45 degrees from horizontal.

The specs for the pole are in the manual it would not be difficult to construct.

The dealer I purchased my 240 from showed me how to rig it and we raised the mast by hand without the mast raising system - 2 guys basically lifting it and walking it vertical. We did it, but ever since then I've used the mast raising system and gin pole. It's well worth the 5 minutes it takes to rig it up, and, honestly, seems much safer to me.

You can definitely fashion one of your own as suggested. until then, is there another 240 around you could borrow a pole from? I think the 23.5s have the same gin pole - maybe the 260s too? Crazy Dave?

Mast step pole

It has been a few years since I had my 240, but I recall it was a specific pole attached at the step for leverage. I have my old manual someplace around and happy to scan and send set up section if you'd like.

Great boat - we had lots of fun with the 240.

Since I am the culprit for the mast raise system, the boat came standard with that system for the 240. I am retired and all my books are gone but I believe it is a 1 inch stock stainless steel. One end has stainless steel wire that goes thru a drilled hole and is looped around stainless steel inserts with two compressed fittings. The other end is cut so it will marry to the backside of the inside of the mast where the track for the mainsail is which is very important. I cannot remember the length.

As for the CDI furler that is another item unrelated to the mast raise system. Ok guys, what is the length of that. You can purchase stainless steel tubing from a pipe distributor but it is expensive unless you can purchase a section of it from a scrap yard or boat yard.

There are two things to note. Never lay your hand on the middle of the mast raise tube as you may cause it to bend if trying to push on it while in use thus causing it to fail and the mast falling down. Secondly, when under load after the forestay with or without furler is attached to the forestay chain plate, use your foot with shoe on of course to push the line down when releasing the line from the jam cleat of the mainsheet or you could loose a finger or hurt it very badly. Take time to read the instruction on mast raising and that can be read on line thru the reference from Phil Herring.

Thank for all the help on this. The manual I found online tells me to connect the mast raising system to a U bolt in the anchor locker but I don't seem to have one in there. Do I use the connector plate where the Furler attaches?

If you use the forestay plate on the bow for the block and tackle you won't be able to connect your CDI furler once the mast is up.

If you cant find the U-bolt in the anchor locker (it is centered just below the forestay plate) put the main sheet block and tackle onto a bow cleat.

The gin pole is necessary if you have no help when raising the mast. Even with help, it makes the task that much easier. I highly recommend you fabricate one. If you search this forum's archives you should find prior threads on the topic with pole measurements. The trailer sailor forums have a number of innovated designs for boats that didn't originally supply a gin pole. Those topics are really worth locating and reading.

As for the CDI jib furler, it has a tendency to lay on one spreader or the other when the mast is going up. This causes the mast to twist and complicates the task. I now lash the assembly to the end of the gin pole to keep it centered during the process.

The U bolt was generally in the anchor locker below the anchor and line which is also used to tie the anchor off with too.

The length of the pole (on my 23.5) was the distance between the mast hole, where it fit, and the u-bolt in the anchor locker when the mast was up (with the gin pole horizontal). So, as the mast is raised, the pull from the sheet is basically vertical on the pole eye when the mast is nearly up.

Thank you so much for all the help. Knowing how essential the pole is I just browsed the store on this website and actually found out that they sell the mast raising pole for H240 so I am all set.
