Hi we just bought a albin vega 27 and they tell us the fuel pump is
bad....this is a 2000+ job to fix....the boat has a combination
propeller...if we put the money into the engine(MD6A desiel) and the
prop goes bad can we convert the engine to a conventional propeller?
I am not sure I am asking this question correctly...my husband is
with the boat ...he is trying to take it from Glen Cove NY to Noank
Ct our home port....So we need to decide if it makes sense to invest
money in this engine.......Can anyone help?

Fuel pumps don't cost $2000. Someone is trying to take advantage of you.
Check with a different mechanic. Keep in mind replacing a small diesel costs
around $7,000 installed. There is much more to a diesel than a fuel pump.

Hi.:

That's right- fuel pumps don't cost $2000
But I like to answer your question about getting a new
engine.
A Yanmar 1GM10 Diesel costs about $4000 (new), and you can
install it yourself. To convert from the combi-drive to a
conventional prop all you need is a 25 mm shaft (that way
you can utilize the stern bearing and stuffing box). But
make sure you get a 'riser' for the exhaust (minimum 4
inches) to prevent sea water intrusion.
I used to have an Albin 0-21 gasoline engine. When it went
bad, I installed a Yanmar 1GM10. It was quite easy.
Unfortunately I did have water intrusion and it cost me
dearly. I should have bought a new Yanmar again, but
instead had the one in the boat fixed and it cost me more
than a new engine... and now it doesn't run right! In other
words, I may have to buy a new one anyway.

I don't think you can convert the MD6A to a conventional prop... There
is no standard "transmission" and the prop is always spinning in one
direction, even in "neutral" it spins.

$2,000 seems way too high for a fuel pump issue ... I had an auxiliary
electric fuel pump & filter in addition to the mechanical pump and
engine filter on my engine. The electric pump did most of the work
anyway.

PS. Steve Birch sells a combi-prop rebuild kit, if that ever goes bad.--

I agree with the others the fuel pump doe not cost much but it may be the
injection pump they are looking to replace. That may cost 2000 to
replace/rebuild and have installed. If this is the case let me know as I
have an extra injector pump from my MD7A which may fit. I do not have it in
from of me to get the serial # but if need be I can get it tomorrow.

Also FYI I just rebuilt my MD7A and Sound marine Diesel in Middletown CT
were very helpful. He also sells the Beta replacement at a price comparable
to anyone else.....
