Francis knocked her off her stands. Minor cosmetic on the outside but water damage on the inside. Has anyone ordered wood direct from Catalina? It sounds like a bulkhead and other wood damage. I'll have the boat shipped to the west coast to do repairs and cruise far from hurricanes. Seems to me if I can get original wood parts from Catalina they will be a better match. Any thoughts?

Catalina Yachts • 21200 Victory Boulevard • Woodland Hills, California 91367 • Phone 818 884-7700 Ask for parts department, and maybe speak to customer service, if your boat is going to be transported and it's out here maybe they can do the work if you take the boat to them.

re wood reconstruction

I tried calling the main Catalina Parts number and they referred me to someone within. I am hoping they will return my call/message. The boat will be in Anacortes, hopfully by November 1st. I am hoping to be able to order things like wood doors, bulkhead next to chart table, bulkhead between setee and locker forward on the port side, cabinents, and who knows what else. I won't know what can be refinished and what will need to be replaced until I get the boat up here. I am sure hoping I can buy direct from Catalina so that she can be restored to pre hurricane damage condition. If anyone has done anything like this I'd sure like to hear from them. capran@yahoo.com 509 466 2706

I have removed all the wood pieces,

including paneling for refinishing and it's all pretty straightforward, just check for screws from behind on any pieces mounted to a bulkhead. Especially prevalent in areas like under companionway. Also in So. Cal. is H&L Marine Woodwork, Inc. 2965 E. Harcourt, Rancho Dominguez, CA 90221 (323) 636-1718 & (310) 638-8746. They advertise as being manufacturer of quality wood products for 50 years, RV, Marine & Architectural and largest user of teak in US, they claim to have supplied 60,000 sets of woodwork for "the leading sailboat manufacturer (could be?) & others.

Just found website for teak supply from Thailand

Check their catalog, prices look very good. They appear to have many standard type pieces including doors etc.

disappointing response to wood question

Did finally get a response that was disappointing. I had hoped since the C 34 is still in production that I could get wood parts direct from them. Kent Nelson e mailed me and said that "We were get most of our wood parts from H&L woodworking back in 1997...it's going to be difficult to get bulkheads and other parts to match the existing wood" and that if I have pics or deminsions it would help. I'll have to wait till the boat gets up here to do that but will call H&L. I would have thought Catalina would have had the measurements and parts since the boat is still being made. It is a disappointment to think I may not be able to get her restored to original condition.

Randy, Every year the boats are a little different

Even though the basic Hull below the waterline is the same, many slight changes could occur through the years. Heck, even the matress and cushion manufacturers want you to measure your own specific cushions for replacement because they have found that even exact boats from the same model year might have You can probably get her restored nicely, its just gonna to take a bit more "leg work". Have you thought about using a good marine carpenter ? He/She should be able to match and replace woodwork to make it look good. ps. Even if you did have a piece that fit, it most likely wouldn't "match" the existing woodwork as well as you think. Even if it was an exact "Physical fit" things like "grain", "Darkness or Lightness" and other factors make matching older teak to new difficult. When Catalina builds a boat they match panels from the same batch to keep the look consistent. Good luck

thanks for input and encouragement

Thanks all for your links and input. I guess nothing is ever easy (or not often). I have been on a number of Catalinas of that vintage and thought the wood was fairly similar and had hoped it could have been an off the shelf type purchase. I guess I have to be patient and get the boat up here and see what I have to work with. As to winds, we kept another boat in Anacortes for seven years, on the hard during winter. I was never aware of anything over the 50 to 60 knot range as being common. I guess in Florida I had been lucky, for this was the first time in 12 years of boat ownership down there that I got whacked. It was interesting that Francis and Jeanne both made landfall at the exact same latitude/longitude, but because the eye was alittle smaller in Francis we were in the eye wall the whole time, on the N side which is typically the strongest winds, and it knocked us down. Jeannes eye was bigger and, even though it had stronger winds, we didnt go over a second time. As I get into my project I'll post both questions and progress. After i assess damage, my first priority will be to get the electrical panel replaced so that I can have power on the boat. The auto helm repeaters for speed, depth, GPS, stereo, Link 20, bilge pump switches, inverter, possibly the windlass switch and maybe the battery charger, will need to be replaced. I'm not sure about the latter. Two years ago I installed a new Xantrex true charge 40 in the same location as the old charger, under the trash bin by the sink. The surveyor noted a charger, but put down a prostart model, so I am hoping he made an error and that he was referring to the inverter. Hopefully I'll have the boat up here before the end of the month! We picked Dudley Boat transport to move her. They were the most expensive at $7800, but have alot of experience moving Catalinas. I thought seriously about boats express and checked alot of references, but they are a broker and with 242 trucks, and me only conversing with 7, left a wide range of boaters that could have been different than the glowing reports I heard (but that bid was $6656, quite a bit cheaper). I appreciate all the guidance.

Catalina parts

I'm surprised that you received a less than satisfactory response from Catalina. This spring when the exhaust manifold on my 1978 Yanmar diesel rusted through, I phoned Catalina. They asked for my hull number and put me on hold. Five minutes later they were back on the phone with the original records of the boat. Original records after 26 years. Wow! They faxed a copy of the manifold shop drawing and asked me to compare it with the installation to confirm that a previous owner had not made any changes. Three weeks later, UPS delivered a newly made manifold. I can't imagine better service than that. Maybe you caught someone with a bad hair day or a hangover. Why not give them a second try. If you don't like the treatment, ask for the boss, Frank Butler. He jealously guards the Catalina reputation and is a stickler for customer service.

Catalinas response and future direction re repairs

I may make yet another call but I have received an e mail response which, as I posted, basically refers me to H&L. I have not contacted H&L yet. As much as I would like to get a jump start on ordering, until I get aboard and see exactly what I am dealing with it seems it's hard to get in too detailed a discussion. I called Catalina twice and left two messages with someone they transferred me to that dealt with wood plans, but never received a call back. I then emailed Catalina and got the following response: Randy, We were get most of our wood parts from H&L Woodworking back in 1997. Give them a call at 323-636-1718 and ask to speak to Ron. It is going to be difficult to get bulkheads and other parts to match the existing wood as it will weather differently than that which is currently installed on your boat. If you have digital pictures or dimensions, that will help Ron identify the parts you need. Good Sailing, Kent Nelson Since I don't have pictures yet, nor access to the boat, I figured I'd just wait till it get's here. I will take pics and guess I will have quite a projects entry. Voyager has been a great boat and I have received many compliments on her in my 5 years of cruising the Bahamas. I just hope I can restore her to her original condition. Unfortunately it won't be as easy as I thought when I was thinking I could just order parts direct from Catalina. For example, I also spoke with parts dept about cushions and the electrical panel. I can get cushions if I order a complete set which includes berth cushions for and aft, but they referred me to seaward for any electrical components. I actually live in Spokane, about a 6 hour trip one way to Anacortes. I hope to take off a day or two of work when the boat arrives to clean up the inside and figure out a plan of what to have done versus what I can do myself. It's been very difficul not knowing what she really looks like. All I have is a boat yard 30 second report, a written survey which is obviously rushed and flawed (for example, the charger they list is not the same brand as what I have, and there is no list of an inverter, so I dont know if the charger is OK and it's the inverter that was ruined, or if the charger was wrecked and they over looked the inverter). I did have a friend that was finally allowed to board the boat for about an hour, but without details and photos it's hard to conceptualize what Ive got. I am hoping she gets picked up October 21st, and hope the marine yard follows my instructions so that the rigging and mast arrive OK. I do appreciate all the feedback and support. As this ordeal evolves I know it will be helpful.
